Eyes do-over
Posted Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 3:59 PM

My eyes have been feeling very strange lately. Not twitching really, more like when the eye doctor puts drops in your eyes and you have to leave with those funky dark glasses. Of course, I could be just tired or stressed. But, I’m not really either of those. So I’m going to take a vitamin B supplement mix and see if that doesn’t solve it. Although, I am starting to question my 4 year old’s vitamin B health now. She’s almost completely vegan and takes Juice Plus gummies in the AM but that’s it. She loves feeding the chickens at a little coop down the street and collecting the eggs. So, either I find her an appropriate B supplement or allow her to keep eating eggs. Hummmm...I'll do a search in the forum and see if anyone else has ran into this issue.

Thanks for listen (reading) to my ramblings.

You state that your eyes feel like "when the eye doctor puts drops in your eyes". This is different than an eye twitch. How long have you noticed this? Is there any change in your vision? I don't meant to intimidate, but I agree with Serenevannoy. Eyesight is precious. I had a patient with partial retinal detatchment complain of this same feeling. If this is truly a feeling in the eye itself rather than the surrounding muscle/nerves, I would definitely see the doctor. Based on what he/she finds, you can always refuse a prescription or treatment. It may be nothing, but why take the chance. My advice...take it or leave it...is take the B12 vitamin and see the doctor.

Have you been vegan a long time? I think this would matter to your B12 status.

I don't think there's any (scientific) debate that vegans should be taking B12, whatever their age. It's very important...and luckily very easy. Fortified foods are common--soymilks, some rice milks, many cereals. And vegan multivitamins all have it.

I'm not a parent, so I'm not sure about how best to provide supplementation for children, but the book BECOMING VEGAN by two vegan RDs named Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina has infancy and childhood covered with all kinds of great info. I don't have it handy, but I am happy to look it up for you later if you can't find it.

And I agree seeing your doc is a good idea.

Please take care...and good luck!

Just an update....okay I went to the eye doctors this morning. My yearly eye exam is in a few weeks so I went ahead and did it early. Turns out there's a thin film that cover your eye (duh) and does sometimes swell. The lower portion of mine have "what appeared to be" pockets of fatty tissue which is giving me the numb sensation. Side note: great now my eyes are fat too! Nothing abnormal but since it's a new symptom for me, I have an appointment next week with a medical eye doctor.

So now I'm not too worried I just want the sensation to go away and am happy my eye prescription hasn't changed and on the fun side, I got some really cool new sunglasses!

Thanks for "everyone's" comments at least now I'll get this resolved.
