Hi I have lived for many years with a chronic condition that has resisted diagnosis. All the medical tests have come back normal but I often (most days) feel like I have the flu. I ache, am fatigued, have a headache etc. It ebbs and flows but never goes away. Sometimes I have thought is was related to my montly cycle but when I have said that to the doctors they have never felt there was a connection. Anyways, I was reading something else this week and they were making a connection with the body's need for tyrosine and the connection with iodine to make the thyroid gland work. So, I am wondering can I get sufficient amounts of tyrosine in a vegan diet? All I can find is the presence of tyrosine in meat. I don't really want to go back to eating meat but I am also very tired of not feeling well. The 21 day challenge hasn't affected these symptoms even though I have lost weight, had better regulation of my blood sugars etc.

Tyrosine is found in some plant foods. But it is a non-essential amino acid meaning you don't need to consume it because your body makes it from other amino acids.

I can not speak to the condition you mentioned, but if for some reason you are not making it in your body and you have to consume it, you could take a supplement or focus on the plant-sources (nuts, beans, seeds).

I am so sorry you've been struggling with this, and I can only suggest two things: find a rheumatologist who has a wonderful reputation with women. Word of mouth, get on her waiting list, and have a diary of your symptoms. Second, try, if you haven't before, going off gluten. Just for a month, just to see if that helps.

Everyone is different but just in the chance that this helps I felt I had to suggest these two things.

Best to you,

Ahimsa

As a fellow sufferer of autoimmune disease, I agree wholeheartedly with ahimsa's suggestions. It took me 3+ years to get an accurate diagnosis, and it turned out I had 4 separate disorders, all working together to make me feel crummy. Getting a good doctor (rheumatologist and endocrinologist) is vital, as it the right diet.
