earth balance vegan butter

Hi Folks,
Just wondering if anyone has good information about earth balance vegan buttery sticks or spread? I'm a bit concerned that it's too much like margarine or a not worthy substitute.. any thoughts out there? Thanks!

It's way too high in fat to be healthy for us, but I do eat it occasionally.

I like it. It is made from natural oils, not plastic or whatever margarine is made out of! It is a little salty tasting, but otherwise, I think it tastes like butter.

I know one of the ideas of the kickstart was to cut down on fats, and of course it is high in fat, but I think it is a perfect substitute for butter.

Thank you for all your replies! I will use it sparingly, but I am glad to know it is not made of plastic or close to margarine..

I purchased some and am pleased with it--and I was a die hard butter user. I am just happy that it actually melts! Obviously use it in small amounts, but I find that just a bit is satisfying. I *think* Smart Balance is maybe supposed to be a lower calorie vegan alternative, but need to check the tub and see if that's the case or if I've gotten that name mixed up w/something else. If so, that's what I'll probably purchase next time. I tried Smart Balance a few years ago and liked it. Again, my main criteria is does it melt or not! Laughing

Unlike margarine, Earth Balance is completely vegan (some margarines are not) and does NOT use hydrogenated oils (no trans fats).

Earth Balance: 11g fat; 3.5g saturated fat, 0 trans fat. Smart Balance light: 5g fat; saturated fat 1.5g, trans fat 0g.

Smart Balance light is vegan per the label. It is good on toast, it doesn't melt the same, but it doesn't make the toast wet. It tastes good, it's less expensive and it's readily available.

Earth Balance is more fat and I use it for baking, occasionally sauteing or other recipes that need waxy fat!

Thanks for the stats--very helpful. Sounds like it would be good to have both on hand. Have been doing a lot of experimenting with vegan baking, so I'll keep the info in mind. I think I tried the regular Smart Balance vs the Smart Balance light, but I think the regular version might not be vegan.

I'm an ingredient reader and was checking out mom's tub of Smart Balance, it was not vegan. There are several varieties though, can't remember which one she had.

When I want to make something from my Joy of Vegan Baking cookbook Earth Balance works well.

Earth Balance is a great butter. I like this butter better then the old butter I had " I cant believe its not butter" But I am trying to use it in moderation. Very Happy

I used to buy either real butter or the Smart Balance with Omega-3s (I don't think it was the vegan one), but when I went shopping a couple of weeks ago I decided to give Earth Balance a try and I am so glad I did. I think it tastes better than butter.

Now I need to buy it in stick form so I can try baking with it. Very Happy
