Gardein products?
Posted Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 9:24 AM

Last night I made the Gardein Crispy Tenders. Um, I didn't like them at all. I thought they were greasy and not crisp with a funky smell.

Are they suppose to be like that? Did I not cook them long enough?

I am so disappointed. I need products like this to help me with my transition to Vegan.

I think that the Gardein products are okay if you can enhance (some would say "disguise") them with a good sauce. In a pinch, I like to sautee the chicken-ish fillets in some evoo, lemon, and garlic. Then I add it to some pasta and top with capers.

I've tried the beef tips, too, but I only use them in tacos. For that, I broil them with onions, mushrooms, chili seasonings and peppers, then top with beans, rice and guac. They're really good that way - as good as any vegan tacos I've had in California.

We've tried nearly all of them, but those are the two we've stuck with.
Most of the time, it's the sauce that I don't like, rather than the actual gardein product itself.

I made mashed cauliflower and steamed spinach with it. So not overpowering flavors.

I use Gardein now and then, especially since my omnivore husband likes some of them. They are high in cost and high in calories so they aren't at the top of my list. I try to lean more towards whole, fresh foods, less processed.

Try finding more locally-made seitan. I have bought a product called Ray's Seitan; it's made in Maryland, I think. They carry it at our local Whole Foods.

Better yet, you could make your own seitan and flavor it any way you want to.

I agree with soon2BeVeg and Wild4Stars. Whole, homemade food is best. Healthier, better tasting and better for you! Very Happy

That said, some of my favorite transition foods are:
Morningstar Farms Grillers Chik'n Patties
Morningstar Farms Spicy Black Bean Patties
Morningstar Farms Grillers Chik'n Strips
Morningstar Farms Grillers Crumbles, Sausage Style
Boca Original Vegan Patties
Boca Vegan Crumbles (good for taco salad, add Taco Seasoning)
Gimmie Lean Sausage Style

Oh I agree whole foods are best. But after being raised as a meat eater, I need a little bit of transitioning room. In fact for the past year I have been eating about 95% clean. Normally I would of made the chicken from scratch with my own bread crumbs. But now I am lost as to what to make besides veggies and grains.

So I can make this from seiten? I have ground beef style seiten in my fridge.

I added this to my shopping list. Thank you!

Anything else to add to my shopping list? I have fruit, vegies, grains, earth balance spread, tofu, Daiya Cheese, whole grain pitas (these are vegan), soy yogurt, Silk Unsweetened Almond Milk (which I was already drinking since I am not a milk drinker).

I have a bunch of books on request from my library. Yesterday I was busy searching for recipes online.

Beans and lentils aren't on the list as far as I could see - maybe you've already got a supply of them but they're another key item - hubby makes a red lentil soup that is awesome. Oh, and nutritional yeast (unless you've also got that as well).

Most dry pastas are made without egg unless they say egg noodle. I just checked a couple quickly and no eggs involved although they do have the allergen disclaimer that they are made in the same factory as egg products (like egg noodles).

I just checked. My Whole Wheat pasta is good.

I have some Shirataki Noodles in my fridge too. I had these before and liked them.

For my baking moods, I always keep flax seeds in the pantry. They're so easy to use if you need a quick egg substitute - and much cheaper than EggReplacers. The other must-have in my pantry is a big bag of raw cashews. They're not low-fat by any means, but for those days that you want a bit of creaminess in a recipe, it's perfect. Just soak, blend and add a spoonful or two to your dish.

Or if you can get it, a cashew butter that's just ground cashews (no added oil, salt, sugar, etc) saves the soaking and blending step (and sometimes comes out cheaper than buying raw cashews). We tend to do this because otherwise we'll just munch on the cashews - not good on many levels; none left for recipes, too much fat in our eating, and we've discovered that we really can't tolerate a lot of whole nuts in our day anymore (serious constipation).

Hi all, I have seen some of these in Trader Joes but don't think they carry all of these. We have a Sprouts that's like a Henerys. The Whole Foods is almost 1 hr away. Where would these most likey be?
Thank you. I am still trying to come on over to the Vegan side. Smile

MorningStar and Boca products are often in regular chain grocery stores. Some are in the frozen food section and I've seen some displayed wherever they have the packaged breakfast sausage and similar products. So the Gimme Lean is near the Jimmie Dean

Walmart and I believe even Super Targets carry them. As well as grocery stores. That makes it easy on me because Whole Foods and Trader Joes isn't real close. It isn't far, but it isn't an easy trip.

Hey 3littlemonkeys, I thought I saw a post regarding homemade seiten so I went to find my recipe...when I came back, I couldn't find the post. So....just in case you are interested and I'm not going crazy, I want to tell you that seiten is soooo easy to make. Here is the site for my favorite seiten recipe. I substitute vegan BBQ sauce for the ketchup. It is excellent as a transitional sausage. I've also made a seiten chicken that is great.
