green smoothies any one?
Posted Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 1:12 AM
Green smoothies any one? I've been drinking green smoothies for the past 1 year and it my favorite part of being a vegan. Basically, I select from a variety of green leafy organic vegetables like kale, collard greens, spinach, chard, dandelions. Blend them with some fruit-apples, berries of different kinds, sometimes grapes, oranges etc. There is no fixed recipe. So every time I make a smoothie, it tastes yummy and different from the last time! It tastes wonderful! It is a perfect drink for me after a workout- truly filling and tastes yummy!

Yes, green smoothies are wonderful. I have been using either kale or spinach for the green ingredient. Do you have other green preferences?

I did read on a website to vary your greens because there are different nutrients in different greens.. also something about raw spinach not being so good.. but someone else said that when you coook spinach it loses it's iron... little confused here. http://www.rawfamily.com/recipes at some point soooon i am going to try it! maybe even today....

I love green smoothies too but take the easy way out by using Vega Whole food Smoothie Infusion (by Sequel). I add my own frozen berries and water and voila - perfect smoothie in no time. The spokesperson for this product is none other than Brendan Brazier who will no doubt be featured in this Kickstart at some point. It's full of raw, organic goodies so for those a little leary of drinking liquid spinach and kale, pick up a trial size pkg and give it a go. It really is delicious!

Hey Vegankitty, what a good idea to start this thread! Green drinks can indeed be a way to pack in more color, especially on days when pressed for time. And for those who haven't yet tried a green drink (aka 'blended salad'), the thought does cause a nose wrinkle because of the newness of the idea - but honestly, you'll be surprised at how the 'green' flavor is easily overcome with a little bit of fruit! I'm all about easy, simple fixin's so if you need a place to start, here's my basic green drink recipe: Green Drink Resurrection Bottoms up! Lani Facebook

Hey people! Good to know that so many people are into the green smoothie thingy and many of them are willing to try it out. @Lani, I was too excited to post this msg, but as soon as I do, I am checking out that link. Thank you very much! @ Molly, yeah I think they do keep me filled up...actually I am not into cold cereals...so I can't really compare. I also drink 2 tall glasses. And what I follow is that I do not use the blender more than a minute. I had read somewhere that don't try to overblend your greens. One of my fav combinations is: 1. Leaves of kale 2. A whole apple 3. A whole pear 4. grated ginger. Blend these together. It wonderfully eliminates the bitterness of kale. Actually, I don't mind it, but you like it a tad sweeter, go for a large fruit or just increase the quantity of the fruit. Also, that grated ginger adds such amazing freshness to the drink. I love it!

Yesterday I went to the store and saw the Smoothie Infusion (Brendan Frazer's), so I bought a couple and tried one out this morning. They are really good! And very filling, so I agree with you Mariberry-really easy and complete way to get your greens into a smoothie. I recommend them to anyone. Veggieland: what kind of juicer did you get? My daughter wants a Champion juicer so she can juice wheatgrass, but they are pricey.

My boyfriend is waayyy into the green smoothies, I'm a little leery. He puts the whole apples and pears in like Kitty does, it makes it a little too thick for me. However, my teenage daughter, who will not touch a vegetable to save her life, had some spinach "snuck" into a blueberry smoothie I made her a couple weeks ago. I put it in a green cup, like a website for toddlers recommended. She asked me what I put in different, and I said "Nothing, its the way I always make it", so she drank it anyway... suspiciously...Anyway, there's some good you tube videos on making a variety of them.

I was doing green smoothies, mainly for snacks, for a while. I would put in 1 cup of spinach leaves, 1 cup frozen fruit, water, and a little honey or agave if I needed more sweetness. They turned out like a nice fruit shake because the spinach leaves made them creamy and the spinach blends very well with fruit. I've gotten away from green smoothies, though, mainly because I was at a raw food retreat recently (don't ask!) and the green smoothies they served made me sick - luckwarm and very chunky, so much so that you had to eat them with a spoon. Not my cup of tea in terms of the texture. I do make a smoothie in the mornings, but it isn't a green one. Djuna

Thanks VeganKitty for the tips. I have tried about 4 different kind of kale smoothies (I have a ton of kale) and I must say your favorite with Apple, Pear, and ginger is the best one so far! Everytime I do kale I now pull my ginger out of the freezer and add a touch. Everything else was fine like mango, blueberry, the citrus family was good too, but I did not like kale and banana for some reason. So the flavors are too powerful I always add a touch of water and ice. I have a cheap blender. Here's to health!

I love these! I usually have one or a tofu scamble for breakfast. My recipe is: 1/2 cup almond milk 1 cup blueberries banana 1 cup spinach 1 cup mixed greens 1 tbs. flaxseed 1 tsp. liquid chlorophyll It's delicious, but I'm pretty hungry by lunch.

My favorite "green" drink: Handful of spinach & sometimes a little Kale 1 -2 stalks of celery (for some reason I just love the taste of celery in this drink!) 1 pear 1 green apple fresh pineapple ( or canned in it's own juice when I can't find it fresh) water ice That is a winning combo for me My non-vegan husband really likes this one too. If you by some chance happen to be a little constipated....after this you won't be!

I absolutely LOVE green smoothies - they change the course of my day when I have one. My favorites are Green Goddess (made with Kale) and Southern Sunrise (made with collard greens) - they are here: http://www.plantbasedhealth.com/index.php/other-tasty-favorites I also like to use spinach and frozen mango - the mango makes it creamy and delicious! I love green smoothies as well as green juice. My favorite green smoothie is spinach and/or kale, frozen pineapple and cucumber....delicious. I even add some raw, local honey in, so that I can keep my immunity boosted up.... Yum
