two questions.. i have done tummy exercises before.. like laying on the floor, pelvic tilt and tighten..

i could notice a difference rather quickly.. but as soon as i stopped it was a matter of days before the pouch comes back.. why? btw. i never got anywhere near flat. i had a pouch before boobs.

one other comment.. i realized that i tend to want to breathe just the opposite of what you recommend. breathe in and pull the belly in.. not good huh?

thanks lani!!

cch22,

The pooch problem exists on 2 levels. Part of it is excess abdominal fat, part of it is out-of-condition transversus abdominus muscle. You have to change body composition to lose the fat. You have to continue to challenge muscle to keep it conditions. So you can't do exercise a few times and be done with it for good. But with this move, you can quickly train the TA muscle to be rapidly responsive to postural corrections and keeping the pelvis in good position.

On the exhale, you are pulling the abs in - right? This is actually one of the functions of the TA muscle - it works in concert with the diaphragm to expel the breath. During the hold, if you need to breathe in, it doesn't matter because it actually creates more of an isometric workload - great for training the muscle.

Hope this helps! Let me know if any other questions!

THanks Lani,
Yes i do wind up breathing in.. and so i hesitated to continue.. i read somewhere once if you don't do that right you can actually make that area like a hard little soccerball... who wants that?

so i try to breathe out for 7 sec.. but have not mastered that yet laying down.. then i was either holding my breath (cause i dont' want a soccerball) or breathing in shallow and letting it back out.

I did more breathing in and letting it out, cause i am pretty sure we should never hold our breath when exercising.

Cynthia,

The phenomenon to which you refer - the bulging belly muscles - would only apply if you are doing heavy resistance work: such as crunches on your back while holding heavy weights and your rectus abdominus protrudes big time. The isometric squeeze we are talking about is not going to get you into trouble, don't worry!

Plus, as you practice the 7 seconds move, you will quickly be able to snap the deep abdominal muscles IN and feel muscle fatigue right away - a sign of mastery!
