Home for the Holidays

I live in Alaska, and went home to Southern California for winter break (I'm a teacher). I'd been mostly veganish in Alaska for a year, but when I got to CA I told them I was vegan. I can't tell you how easy it made things! People didn't try to tempt me, really, I always made a great vegan dish to bring with me to family potlucks (white bean salad, vegan tamales, soyrizo and potatoes for tacos), and made my immediate fam an amazing vegan dinner on Christmas Day (red lentil soup with lemon, quinoa, and smoked olive oil). We had my birthday lunch at Real Food Daily, and while I did get asked a lot of questions by my family, they were all framed positively. I think the fact that I made them delicious food to begin with really calmed their "What could you possibly eat" fears. My mum and both grandmothers are diabetic; I got my mom Dr. Barnard's Plan to Reverse Diabetes book, and she's transitioning to a mostly plant-based diet herself! I had a great time, eating great vegan foods, and feeding them to other people. My most difficult time has been coming back to Alaska, getting up at 6am in the pitch black dark, and getting back to work at school with so little sunlight. Glad I got my vitamin D dose in first. Happy Tuesday!
