Myrtle Beach/ Charleston
Posted Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 12:39 PM

I'm going on a trip in early Feb and wondering if anyone in the Myrtle Beach/ Charleston area has any favorite restaurants or cool places to get vegan food. I haven't goggled yet but I see there weren't really any listed on the PCRM map. I know I'll be able to order off most menus anyway with small changes, but just looking for the "special" places or somewhere with already great things on the menu. Anyone down that way?

I'm not in that area. However, check out www.happycow.net and they should have listings of vegetarian/vegan restaurants in that area. It's been a very helpful web site for me.

We go to Charleston periodically on vacation but it's been awhile since we've been and I was ovo-lacto vegetarian at the time, so things might have changed. I'm sorry if I'm leading you on a wild goose chase, but I remember we both really liked a place called Jestine's, which is on one of the main roads that leads into Battery Park (I'm sorry but I can't remember the name of the road) and is about a block away from Hyman's Seafood (horrible tourist trap of a place - don't believe anyone who recommends that restaurant) and Sticky Fingers. It's kind of a hole in the wall but is clean and has great vegetarian food, at least. Not 100% sure about vegan food, though. Confused We haven't been there since my almost-5-year-old was around 8 months old, so as I said, it's been awhile.

Good luck, as the coastal regions of NC and SC tend to be pretty conservative, so I'm not sure there are a ton of options, though I would think Charleston would have something for vegans.

I try to stay away from Myrtle Beach but there are a ton of chain restaurants there, so I'm sure there are vegan things to eat there as well. Very Happy

Just wanted to add that we don't really go to Myrtle Beach only because we tend to like the quieter, more family friendly beaches in NC and SC. Myrtle Beach can be very rowdy, depending on when you go, though they do have lots of outlet stores, which is nice. Smile
