Where Oh Where are the Recipes?

Ok I'm a dummy. I know little about cooking and even less about cooking vegan. Today on the menu was a Vegan veggie burger for lunch. Sounded interesting. But where is the recipe? I searched the pcrm.org site and got nothing.

I don't use the recipes and thus don't know where to find them ... but if you want to make your own, there are so many vegan recipes out there for veggie burgers! I'd start with the one in the book, Veganomicon. It's easy and works out great. Or you can buy them in the frozen section of just about any supermarket. Boca Vegan Burgers were on sale this week at my local stores.

Not every recipe is meant to be from scratch, this one included. You can buy vegan veggie burgers at most grocery stores. However, if you are so inclined to make one at home, by all means, do. And please share the recipe!

If there's not a link right there (click on the text, usually it's a different color from black), then it's typically referring to something you can pick up from the grocery store as-is. For example, if it says "veggie patty" then it's referring to ANY veggie patty you like, whether you pick up a Boca burger at the grocery store or you make one from a favorite cookbook or website recipe. (BTW the big fast food burger places will sub a Boca burger in place of a regular burger if you request it - of course, it's cooked on the same equipment as the meat and all...)

Ahhh, I've been to the grocery store thousands of times and never saw them. I'll go again today and get some and try one tomorrow! I learned a new word, Boca.

Thanks,
Ed

I wonder why they're Boca burgers? "Boca" is mouth in Spanish. Could that refer to 'tasty'? Or, is the company HQ in Boca Raton, FL? Anyone? Very Happy

The original HQ were in Boca Raton, per wiki.

Be very careful when purchasing veggie burgers, both at restaurants and at the grocery store. Most are NOT vega, and contain eggs, cheese, or other dairy products. Become a label reader!

Some of the good ones are:
-- Boca Vegan
-- Boca Organic Vegan
-- GardenBurger GardenVegan
-- GardenBurger Chipotle Black Bean
-- GardenBurger Garden Veggie Patty
-- Morningstar Farms Grillers Chik'n

Maybe it's because I live in Texas, but I have found that most restaurants, especially fast food chains, do not have veggie burger options. A few of them offer a black bean patty, but it is rare.

Yes, definitely need to check - some are vegetarian but not vegan. I do know that both BK and McD's up here in the northeast have basic veggie burgers - BK uses MorningStar Farms, however they do have non-vegan ingredients in them. In both BK and McD's, you have to know to ask for it, it's not usually on the signs but it's there. Of course, you'd also need to leave off a lot of the 'toppings' - that's why we used to tend toward BK, it takes way less time to get a custom order than at other fast food places.

If you can't find them in the freezer section, look in the produce department. The stores out here keep them in different locations. Or you can ask, but some of the 'help' won't know what they are Very Happy

I am also a fan of the Sunshine burgers.

Other important ingredient to be aware of, especially if you are allergic to them, are tree nuts (often walnuts) that are found in some of the frozen plant-based burgers.

I am a newbie to the vegan diet, although I am very lactose intolerant so do not miss the dairy. I do miss eggs, chicken, and fish though....
