Weight Gain

I have been going vegan since May. I have been on the 21 Kickstart this week (5 days so far). I have not eaten anything I should not have(this week). I am NOT losing weight!!!! In actually, I have gained about 12 pounds. What am I doing wrong? I know at first I was eating the wrong types of veggie foods. I was eating too many nuts and non-chocolate trail mix. I was also eating potato chips and "non-meat or dairy" junk food. I have not done that this week. When will the weight start coming off?

I started Kathy Freston's 21 day cleanse 19 days ago (no animal products, no sugar, gluten, alcohol or caffeine). I have only lost 2 pounds. I became vegetarian 10 months ago and lost 12 pounds since then (14 counting this 2 recent). So, it has been slower for me than I had hoped too. BUT: Since starting the cleanse I have noticed that my body is changing in other positive ways: 1) My tummy is flatter & my clothes are fitting better, & more comfortably. 2) My food cravings have vanished! I used to want bread & dairy all day & night, and now I do not miss them at all. 3) My IBS, which had pretty much gone with eliminating meat, has completely vanished with removing all animal products (dairy especially I suspect). Try not to focus on the scale. I don't know how much weight you feel you need to lose, but whatever it is, you didn't gain it in a week, it's going to take time for it to come off. Be gentle and compassionate with yourself, and give it time. Let me know how you are doing.

Gaining 12 pounds in less than a week is unusual. I would caution to really watch the fat and fiber. Fat should go way down and fiber way up. Getting fat down means avoiding oils, nuts, and many processed foods. Make sure packaged foods are, of course, vegan, but also have no more than 3 grams of fat per serving (including plant milks, tofu, etc.). Getting fiber up means eating more whole foods: oats, quinoa, brown rice, black beans, chic peas, lentils, apples, bananas, grapes, sweet potatoes, kale, broccoli, yellow peppers, carrots. Keep us posted. If your fat is down, fiber up, you will definitely start to see results.

I think she meant that the 12 pounds gained is since May, when she started eating Vegan. I, too, would agree that gaining 12 pounds in 5 days would signify something very, very wrong!

Yes, I meant 12 pounds since last May. But my weight has not budged since Monday. I am not necessarily doing this to lose weight but for health. But I do need to lose this weight I have gained. I am diabetic and my endocrinologist will have a fit when I go in October! I have just recently read Dr. Barnard's book - 21 Day Weight Loss Kick Start. I did not realized how much fat I was eating. But the past few days I have been having some digestive issues (gas, burping, stomach aches). Is this because of the fiber?

I would guess yes about the digestive issues if you have not been eating this much fiber previously, but it will get better as you continue. You may find you just don't do well with certain foods at all (I can't eat radishes, or too much cucumber, or I belch endlessly!)

Hi Rita, It can be a tough transition at first, and especially frustrating if our bodies don't do what we expect them to do. My experience with vegan eating, health and weight loss has been this: When I eat lots of fresh, raw vegetables (lettuce, greens, bell peppers, celery, carrots) and some fresh fruit, I feel more full, and therefore eat less. When I eat some cooked vegetables (eggplant, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, corn) I feel more satisfied and satiated. When I eat a fair amount, but not too much, of whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, barley, oats) and not bread, I feel thinner and lighter, while still feeling satiated. When I eat more baked or fried items (bread, bagels, chips, rolls, fries) I feel heavy and constipated. When I eat a fair amount, but not too much, of complex carbohydrates (beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash) I feel satisfied and "full." In other words... get your nutrients from a measured amount of complex carbs and whole grains, and fill up on veggies and fruits, while leaving the breads and fried stuff out. You'll feel better, I think. This has been my experience. I hope it can help you.

Remember to make the basis of your diet green and yellow vegetables with loads of leafy greens. If you are eating a majority of grains, nuts, and still using oils, you probably won't lose. And if you REALLY stick to whole foods, you will see the weight fall off.
