I am allergic to wheat, gluten.

I'm diabetic and this fruit and carbs is out of the question for a diabetic. I don't know where to start?

I recommend starting here: http://www.pcrm.org/health/diabetes/.

We found that this way of eating (low-fat, vegan) works better than the standard dietary recommendations for people with diabetes. Works better in terms of blood sugar control, weight loss, blood lipid levels, and medication reduction.

I have been a diabetic for over 20 years. I started following this lifestyle around 20 months ago. My A1C tests have all been in the low 6's. Before when I tried to watch carbs I was lucky if I could get a low 8. I feel better & I am healthier now than I have ever been. I eat very well & a lot. I have lost weight slowly over this time (about 70 lbs.) but that is probably due to my bottomless pit of a stomach. If I ate less I would have lost more. Losing weight was not my original goal, but an appealing effect none the less. I still take long acting insulin, but only a fraction of the amount I use to take. I also have gotten off of three other medications. My goal is to be as free of drugs as I can get.

Hi KCwriter - I'm diabetic too. Interestingly, when I went to "diabetes school" at our local hospital, we were told most things were NOT off limits, but that we should read labels carefully, choose carbs wisely (whole grains over "white foods") etc. The single most important thing we were told to manage blood sugars was EXERCISE.

Well, I'm here to tell you that I'm a 10-toed sloth most of the time, but following this program has also seem my A1C improve (and that was after about 10 days on this program!). I'm expecting even better results with other numbers when I go for my next blood work at the end of April. I fully expect to be off metformin completely sooner than later.

Stick with it and give it a good honest go. You'll see the difference. Honest!

kcwriter--When my husband became a diabetic, I went to the diabetic nutrition education classes with him. We heard the standard call for counting carbs, fats and calories. We tried it for about a week and felt imprisoned by the counting carbs part. We had already cut way back on meat, poultry and fish and didn't want to increase our intake of such things. So I started doing my own research on diabetes and I was fortunate to run across much information by Neal Barnard and then found his book on "Reversing Diabetes". When we went back to the diabetes educator she was very leery of our desire to become vegan. And I'm here to tell you, many people JUST DON'T KNOW THE TRUTH...even the people in the field. My husband and I have both become vegan and his A1C went from 7.4 last summer when diagnosed to 6.2 in January of this year. He has been able to avoid going on medication for it so far. If you read Dr. Barnard's book, you will see easily why this diet makes sense and the standard diet does not. Good luck! It's been an adventure of discovery for us and we both feel soooo much better on this plant-based diet!

Wow, I just got online since yesterday. Thank you all for the uplifting advice. Today we went to the health food store and I got beans, lentils, soymilk, and a few veggies. I also got some soy fake meat products to use as flavorings in my cooking.

Well, today went so well. I ate beans and tortilla for breakfast. Brown ricew/fake sausage and veggies in a soy sauce. And then some beans and tortillas for dinner. I've had 2 apples. You know what? I cooked everyone elses food and at least for today, I feel so good. One day at a time, I pray to do this.

I've never been a big meat eater but love chicken. so I imagine I'll do okay. Thanks again. See ya tomorrow with good news. kc

KC

I was diagnosed as a "Type 2" diabetic 10 years ago. I have tried from time to time to follow the ADA "diabetic diet" with very little success.

I tried South Beach (My Triglycerides went way up). Lately my fasting glucose readings were alarmingly high (180+). My doctor is considering whether or not to put me on insulin injections.

I found out about this program on our PBS station just a week ago. Dr. Barnard made a lot of sense. I bought his book. I have been on the diet for only 4 days. Already my energy levels are up and I am losing some weight. BUT most important! My fasting Blood sugar this morning was 129!!!! (I know that's not great, but, I am encouraged) I don't even believe it myself! My long term goal is to reduce my meds.

I, obviously, don't have much experience on the diet yet, but, I am really "PUMPED" by these early results. I will be getting another Blood test in about a month, I sure hope the a1c starts to drop.

OBTW the recipes in Dr. Barnard's book " Dr Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes" are delicious and I am going to try some of them from this site as well. So far, so good! Also, I had dinner at a reastaurant the other evening and was able to eat "Vegan" by "cherry picking" the appetizer menu and having a short chat with the chef.

So from one "Newb" to another, hang in there! And Good luck! Very Happy
