Banana Substitute
Posted Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 11:00 PM
I have a very strong intolerance to bananas and find it impossible to eat them, so I need some suggestions for banana substitutes. For example, Brendan shared his "Recovery Pudding" recipe for something to eat after workouts - which I love the idea of. Does anyone have any good ideas as to what I could use as a replacement? I'm guessing they act a little as a binder in this particular recipe. Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks in advance! Dawn Marie

I think probably sweet potato would be the closest in texture and binding quality. That's what's used in a lot of recipes when it says to replace such-and-such, to "use banana or sweet potato". So, I think that would work. They're also about the same calorie content.

Sorry - I dont have a good substitute for bananas. I suspect that since this is a recovery drink the bananas were a deliberate addition for their vitamin C,vitamin B6, potassium and magnesium content, not just for the thickening/binding. However, some general ideas: - If I want a binder in my fruit smoothies I sometimes use chia seeds as these are high in omega3 and also go gelatinous when soaks in fluid. Chia seeds are great for a number of reasons. This is but one link. You can do a web search to find out more. http://www.purewellbeing.com/contents/en-uk/d152.html - If I simply want more fibre and binding I will sometimes use ground physllium husks. good luck.

Mollyhorn, Do the recipes say to cook the sweet potato or use raw? Sorry to ask a silly question but i have not seen this mentioned before as a substitute. I imagine raw might be ok in something you are going to cook but I cant picture this raw in a smoothie. Might just be me though.
We could probably start a whole section on substitute ingredients in vegan cooking! I wasnt very brave about trying things when I first starting eating vegan and stuck to the recipe or bought vegan foods. I am having more fun cooking now and feel more confident about trying recipes that need substitutes to be vegan. However, I still have a long way to go and lots to learn.

Yes, you'd cook the potato, but I didn't realize you were talking about using it in a smoothie. (Though pumpkin smoothies are delicious!) I found that for myself, I wanted something with more density after a workout – something I could chew on! For that reason, I like nutrition bars, raw vegetables and fruits, etc. Hope that helps.

I am not sure if an avocado would work but I have used avocados in puddings etc and they make things nice and creamy with no weird taste!

I also would suggest avocado due to it's creamy texture.
