What do you use as a substitute for peanut butter?

we use a lot of different nut butters: peanut, cashew, sometimes almond butter. Just depends on what we're using it for. Cashew butter (or pureed cashews) are a nice base for a not-cheese sauce great for nachos and mac'n'cheese. Note that nut butters are not an everyday thing because of the fat content. Also, you want to look for nut butters that are just that nut - no added salt, sugar, or other oils/fats.

why do you want to substitute peanut butter? some of them are vegan... right? is it the fat content? are you putting it in a recipe or on a sandwhich?

recipe i would go with another nut butter. on a sandwich i would head for the hummus w/veggies.

Honey found a horseradish hummus he likes.. pretty good cause before oct 10 he thought he didn't like hummus at all..

LOL yeah, before the Sept kickstart neither hubby nor I thought we liked a lot of things - now hummus is a staple, we snack on cooked chickpeas, and hubby is excited to try a roasted chickpea recipe from this issue of Vegetarian Times. Kale, chard, lots of those dark leafies that have strong flavors were puzzles but now they're regular items in the menu.

It is because of the high fat content. My husband eats peanut butter daily. I thought that peanut better, which is not really a nut but a legume, was not allowed.

Am I wrong?

Nuts and nut butters are high in fat, especially if you're eating the standard commercial kind with extra sugar, salt, hydrogenated fats. So, if you're trying to cut fat, then you need to reduce the amount of nuts/nut butters you are eating AND get the kind that says "Peanuts" and nothing else on the ingredient list.

However, it's a matter of balance. If a tablespoon of peanut butter is the majority of the fat in your day, that's not bad (for instance, my hubby puts a tbl of pb on his oatmeal, yeah he's weird :lolSmile If, however, you're relying on nut butters heavily, that's a different matter.

I buy only fresh ground peanut butter at the Publix deli. It has no salt or additives, nothing but ground peanuts. He probably has a couple TBL. a day. He does not need to lose weight and could probably stand to gain a few pounds.

Then there's probably no reason to really be concerned about it.

I have been using this product for my family that just will NOT give up peanut butter for about 6 years. It is really quite good. http://www.bellplantation.com/ the fat content is quite appealing.

However for myself over the last year I have become hooked on crunchy almond butter. You just need a little bit but it is WONDERFUL!!! Something about the toasted almonds... Wink
