Type 2 diabetes

following the kickstart with the daily menu and/or the nutrition recipes....but my morning fasting blood sugar is still about 145, can someone recommend evening snacks that would help ...thanks

1 - give it time. it'll probably take this first week before you see blood sugars significantly dropping as your body re-adjusts 2 - are you exercising? that's the best way I've found, hands down, to get my morning fasting readings to go down 3 - what are you having for an evening snack now, if any? --Deb R

Thanks for answering Deb...I guess I am in a hurry for those numbers to drop  Can't exercise due to a disability and am trying to follow the PCRM healthy snacks

Vermonter, I switched from Dr. Bernstein's ultra low carb diet to Dr. Barnard's vegan eating plan. I expected my glucose scores to go up at first, and they did. They came down nicely towards the end of the second week and have stayed down. If fat in our muscle cells is the problem, then it takes some time for that to be corrected.

If it's smack in the middle, I generally don't snack. And, if it's at the upper end (or high), no snacks for me. Are there any ways you can move your body more - even a little more. If you need to be seated, lifting small (like 1 lb) hand weights while watching TV maybe. Doing one extra trip up the stairs helps. Anything at all that burns just a little extra is a good thing. It doesn't have to be an hour on a stairclimber to be effective - just a little more activity than you do now. --Deb R

Sometimes I will have a spoonful of natural (salt free) peanut butter just before going to bed and that seems to work for me. Have you ever tested your blood sugar in the middle of the night? That number might be telling insofar as why your a.m. numbers are high.

I was getting some higher than usual numbers the first couple days but today I got 6mmol/L (like 10 and I've never seen a level that low before since I haven't managed to get my sugars under control since diagnosis at any point and was facing a medication increase 3 weeks ago because my fasting numbers weren't coming under control fast enough (I choose not to increase yet). I know one reading does not a tread make but it made me happy this am and hopefully it's an indication that it just takes some time for you.

For me, I have that "(n)ever-popular" dawn syndrome as it's called. Normally, blood sugar rises as your body warms up prior to waking in the morning. For some, it's not a gradual rise but a nasty spike. I can have a low glycemic dinner, do an hour exercise, no other food, and have a pre bedtime glucose reading of <130 only to wake up with a fasting reading of 150, then I eat breakfast and my post breakfast reading ends up lower than my fasting reading. Oy! Totally frustrating because sometimes it's fine (in range) and other times it's not without me changing anything. Alas, being female in and of itself (with the hormonal swings involved) can cause spikes and drops. However, I do find that if I keep up on exercise and keep sticking to a vegan low fat low glycemic track (like the kickstart), even the high morning readings are closer to where they should be and I more often get in range readings. --Deb R

Congrats Pele!!! of course it is significant even if it's one morning Mariberry, one thing I have noticed is...if I don't sleep through the whole night my sugars are higher...just like you said about being lower after breakfast...of course, I'm not against getting up every 2 hours and eating HA NOT good

You'll just need to check the label. By the way, you're right on about poor sleep affecting numbers. I will go periods of time when I wake up in the middle of the night for weeks on end and then can't get back to sleep. Those times I do notice my numbers are adversely affected.

Alas, part of perimenopause, it seems, is waking up at 3 am almost every morning...so if that's contributing to the dawn syndrome, looks like it's gonna be here for a while longer. As far as no sugar no salt added PB (just peanuts) there are lots of national brands in the grocery store - even some of the old-school brands - that have "natural" style PB with no added fats, sugar, or salt. There are at least 4 or 6 different brands in our local chain grocery. --Deb R

thanks Deb, I'll have to look around and read the labels a little closer. Up here in Vermont we don't have Safeways; my daughter who lives in Va. does and says they are pretty good for providing variety. yesterday after supper took me metformin and included my glipizide...woke up at 2:30, took my sugar hmm, 89 too low! had toast w/ pb and coffee went back to bed. at 9:00 took it again 130 5mg of glipizide throws the numbers too low and causes stomach aches ~ Mary Ann

Smuckers (The jam folks) make a just-peanuts PB as well. Or, you can buy unsalted roasted peanuts and throw them in the ole food pro and make your own. My son sometimes gets a kick out of making our own peanut butter down at the co-op. They have two machines - one for salted, one for unsalted - and you can dial the chunkiness on the grinder and make your own right there. --Deb R

I am Type 2 Diabetic and just got a perscription for Flovent and Albutirol for breathing difficulties after having the flu. Hoping they aren't going to be a regular medication for me. As they are steroids does anyone have experience with how they affect BS readings?

Keep a close eye on your glucose readings and adjust food and meds as needed (in concert with your caregivers) - you don't indicate what meds (if any) you use for diabetes management, but those might need adjusting temporarily. ---Deb R
