We are all trying to eat healthy here and it seems that some of you are trying to loose some weight on the go but I was wondering if anyone is adding some exercise to their daily routine?? And what is a good amount of exercise to do on a daily?? basis?

There is a previous thread already started on this topic – check back through the previous days.

HI KayKay, I guess it depends what your goals are. To lose weight? To tone up? To keep your heart healthy? The very basic is to start where you are and build up to a routine that consists of a 5-10 min warm up, 20 min of arobic (heart health & gets the body functioning), 5-10 min cool down that includes stretching. if you haven't exercised in a while you might add stretching after the warm up and before the arobic. Arobic can be anything.. walking fast.. means you could talk, but you really don't want to. could be using your treadmill.. or playing raquetball... or even going dancing.. but enough to get your heart rate up... now if you want to lose weight increase the time for arobic and do some wind sprints when you are able.. and add some weights.. you could start with one and two lbs.. some floor exercises... When trying to lose weight i shoot for an hour a day of either or arobic or weights or a combo of both..

kaykay - don't sweat it. it probably got pushed to the back. by the end of this thing there will be plenty of redundant threads, but the more there are the longer it takes to track down some half-remembered piece of information or great-sounding recipe tips. i plan to exercise more, but haven't actually started yet. i don't have a lot to lose, but I definitely need to be more active & heart healthy. I'm aiming for establishing a habit of a 1/2 hour cardio per day plus some weight training/toning as well.

I don't think I get to 1/2 hour cardio a day unless I walk fast enough to get my heart rate up (hmmm... I should test that one day). I've been doing weight training once or twice a week now for 2 1/2 years and I finally see and feel the results. It feels soooo good and got to say.... I got gooooooood looking legs now

Enticing recipes for meat-eating spouse?
Posted Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 1:19 PM
A newbie to vegan eating and long-time married to a man who loves meat and fish, I would love to cook a few irresistible vegan meals that we can share. I lost 11-12 pounds since August 2009, am now 157-159 lbs. My current goal is within sight: 147-150 lbs. My motivation for increased exercise and a better diet comes from my internist's warning re: prediabetes, at recent physical. It is so important to get moving that I do not obsess about the speed, type of exercise, or company (solo, gym class, with friend). Two serious allergies/intolerances affect my meal preparation. I am extremely allergic to tree nuts (anaphylaxis) and very lactose intolerant. Thank you for any insights!

Oh no. I want it all, the heart in shape and the toned muscles. Looks soo much better. So am walking to work (approx 20 min each way) and school (approx 1 hour each way); am going to the gym once or twice a week; to rope skipping once a week and if I can get out of bed early enough I skip for 20 to 30 minutes before going to work once or twice a week; and next week will be my first folk dance class. And when the weather gets better, I hope I'll find some time for hiking. Just hoping I'm not overdoing it. I go crazy if I cannot exercise

I am hitting the gym again. Haven't been in since I had a bad injury to my ankle early in the fall. It feels good to be back but I am so out of shape. I like to do cardio work on the eliptical, core work on the floor -- hits all the major muscles at one time and really tones-- and weights, too. Since I am trying to lose weight, I do cardio daily ( well, 5 times a week)but the core and weights, I switch up, never working the same muscle groups two days in a row. It feels great to be back, though I am a bit tired and achy today. I know in about 3 weeks, between the kickstart plan and being back at the gym, I will look and feel so much better. Oh, and I am using burst training for my cardio.... go as hard as I can for 1 min, easy up for 90 sec., hard as I can for 1 min etc. I do it 6 times with a warm up and cool down. It is always very effective in weight loss.

Yoga is great and goes hand in hand with eating a plant based diet.

Do you know of an inexpensive, preferably at home, very beginner DVD or instructional materials that don't rely heavily on kneeling? I've looked at a couple and they do a lot of "child pose" and "dog" pose that my knees just cannot handle. I'd love to add yoga to my treadmill (cardio) and my soon-to-start hand weights. --Deb R

Check your local library for a beginner yoga video. There was a woman who used to do easy yoga on national public TV who has videos at our local library (the way I started yoga). Definitely not a lot of "down dogs" or kneeling. I'm sorry I can't remember her name right now!

I tried googling "PBS yoga" and I didn't find hte same lady I remember from when I was a kid (maybe I'm just remembering her wrong). I came across several folks, among them Lilias Folan. She offers a lot of different yoga videos, some with a focus on the aging crowd. A link to her website: http://www.liliasyoga.com/store/index.htm Another one I have seen recently on PBS (during the telethon season) is Peggy Cappy who teaches yoga for arthritis: http://www.peggycappy.com/
