Vegan diet may lead to infertility?
Posted Friday, January 22, 2010 at 4:42 PM

Hello all the fellow vegans!

I have been on this 21 day kickstart program and I have felt so good than never before. I do not have the usual monthly PMS mood swings, no more bloaty feeling. I am just loving it to be a vegan. But recently I told about this to one of my colleagues at work and she said that a vegan diet in the long run may lead to infertility. Sure, my monthly regular menstrual cycle is less bothersome (no more of those irritating cramps!! Smile). I even told this to her upon which she said that if you do not get cramps during your menstruation, you are not ovulating. How much fact does this hold? Am I at any kind of risk? I am not yet married and I surely do not want to become infertile.

I would ask her where she got her information, ask for the studies that prove this statement. And then, if she produces these items start doing your own research. You're only going to feel comfortable with the information that you collect and believe for yourself.

I almost don't know how to respond to the idea that if you don't have cramps you are not ovulating! Sounds medieval and, at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, it sounds anti-woman. I mean seriously. What else does she put up with because it's "normal"? I worry for my fellow humans.

BUT, the threat of infertility can be terrifying to some, so I understand your fear. The good news is your coworker is wrong on all accounts.

I will refer to the American Dietetic Association's position paper on vegan diets that states they are perfectly appropriate and beneficial for all stages of the life cycle.

I do know that she is WRONG about the cramps meaning you're not ovulating. That's just silly.

I have met a woman who was a former vegetarian that had trouble conceiving. She was told eating too many soy products can contribute to her situation. I would research that, it's probably what she's talking about.

I have been a vegetarian for 21 years and I've never eaten a lot of soy products. You really don't have to.

Take care! Chris

Well thanks for that lead. I'll surely do some research on my own before believing such anti-vegans!!

I am 58 years old (and no longer ovulate EVER), however, I NEVER EVER had cramps in my life. Cramps and ovulating DO NOT go hand in hand.

I agree with the previous posts. I am aware of no studies that show being on a plant based diet leads to infertility. Actually it may be that being vegan leads to improved fertility, at least in patients with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome(PCOS)which is present in about 5% of women. PCOS results in a host of difficulties including infertility. A 2003 article by Geri et al in the journal, Eur Rev Med Pharmac Science, showed that a low fat vegan diet improved ovarian function in patients with PCOS.

The level of people's ignorance can sometimes be astounding. And they are always willing to share that ignorance with anyone who will listen.

Not to get too graphic, but I know since I have been vegan things have gone back in time for me. I am 41 and now get ... well sometimes.. You know how guys in high school have to hold a book in front of them sometimes for no good reason? It's like that again.

As Dr. Barnard likes to remind men too macho to be vegan: If the pipes are not flowing very well around the heart, they are not flowing very well anywhere in the body.

Starrynights: your friend does not have correct information. Ovulation occurs midcycle - about day 14 - not during menstruation.
A decrease in menstrual cramping is a fairly common effect of a adopting a more natural diet, and I'm glad you are able to enjoy it.

As far as veganism and sterility, again, remember the animal world. Elephants and sheep and cape buffalo are all vegetation eaters.
