New Cookbook
Posted Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Just got Isa Chandra Moskowitz's new cookbook "Appetite for Reduction: 125 Fast and Filling Low-Fat Vegan" from the library. It is a keeper! Even my husband thought all the recipes look deelish! I'm going to run out and buy it. Making the veggie potpie tonight. There are tons of recipes that are quick and the only exotic ingredient I saw so far was tamarind paste. Besides I love her style of writing, her serving size for hummus (fat free) is a 1/4 cup becuase as she says "who eats just a tablespoon of hummus?” there's a ton a nutrional info, also. (I always get new cookbooks from the library, first. That way I'm not stuck with one that only has a few good recipes.)

I just got this cookbook about a week ago. I told my 16-year-old that everything looked so good, and she said, "like what" in the typical teenage tone. I have tried 3 things. The onion rings and ginger bok choy (left out the soba and ate it as a side) were very good. The lasagne was a fail. I made the pepper steak for a future meal, and just tried a bite, it seemed ok. I think I will try the black bean mole next. Keep us posted as to what you try, and whether it was good or not.

I got it a few weeks ago and was looking through it last night. I have Veganomicon and her cookie book -- this one looks like a winner so far, although I haven't cooked anything out of it yet.

made the veggie pot pie and it was delicious, plus cheap. I think most expensive ingredient was the mushrooms and the broth. Used Imagine organic no-chicken broth. The only changes I made, left out the salt, as the broth had plenty, used a leek with a little white onion, as I had one that needed to be used up. If I make this again I'd used less broth and more water, to reduce the sodium. The prep time was 30 minutes (and that included rummaging around in my cupboard trying to figure out where the sage was). From prep to sitting down to eat was an hour twenty minutes. Ate it as is, with a slice of Dave's Killer Bread (not a national brand, only available in the NW.

Lovecraft fans (where Evil Dead got the idea from) so that's what inspired us to buy it. We have both the Evil Dead movies though, we're all about the campy horror.

Glad to know it's vegan, and I will pick some up next week when I get back there. I also just got this book, just delivered yesterday, so maybe I need to look thru it before I go to the store this afternoon!! Seems like a pot-pie kind of weekend. Pam

Can't wait to get my copy. Amazon should be delivering on Monday! If I like it I'll probably give a copy away on my blog. Also waiting for the release of The Happy Herbivore Cookbook.
