What is your fav PIZZA???
Posted Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 2:51 PM
HI.. How do you make it? and what do you put on it? i have recently found an awesome pizza crust recipe..it comes out great everytime. Be aware it takes 2 1/2 hours to complete. Of course i use unbleached white flour and unrefined sugar; also dry yeast for whole wheat flour. Even relatives who were eating everything wanted this pizza.. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Amazing-Whole-Wheat-Pizza-Crust/Detail.aspx I bake it a little before putting veggies on it, so it's not soggy.. and husband loves crispy crust. on top i put a good pizza sauce w/no sugar. then garlic & spinach.. or whatever veggies i have on hand. REcently we purchased veggie crumbles and a vegetarian thought it was real meat.. lol... also love to put fresh sliced tomatoes on it.

Hubby makes pizza with freshly ground whole wheat flour (we have a grain mill for grinding grain fresh). I'm not sure of the exact recipe but it doesn't take hours to make. Mix the dough and give it a quick knead, rest it for 20 minutes, while it rests, heat the pizza stone in the oven, shape it, bake it on the hot stone for about 15-20 minutes (I think), add toppings, bake for additional 15 minutes or so. We'll take a can of no salt no sugar diced tomatoes and add a cube of our homemade pesto (yes it does have parmesan in it, herbs are from our summertime garden) and give it a quick whir to make a thick sauce. Sauteed onions, peppers, mushrooms are good toppings, fresh spinach, pretty much whatever we've got on hand. We've always used mozzarella (until now) - our next go is maybe going to be a 'white pizza' using the not-cheese sauce (minus the red peppers so it looks like alfredo sauce), herbs, and veggies. --Deb R

Allow me to represent the lazier bunch: I really enjoy Amy's frozen vegan pizza (no cheese). I will eat half with a giant salad and a glass of red wine. I feel very pampered when I do this. Repeat with second half next day or later in the week.

I had seen this recipe in a magazine. Basically you take a whole wheat pita, lather it with some homemade hummus (with garlic, yummy!) and load it up with your fav veggies n bake it in the oven. It tastes awesome! Like a thin crust, of which I am a big fan!

I love salad pie: I use a crust from the freezer section of the supermarket (they have whole wheat or white) roll it out, top with sauce and while it's baking I toss a garden salad with FF italian dressing. When crust is done throw on the salad and Voila -- salad pie!

Some are a bit high in calories and fat so they are treats, not regulars. I make mini pizzas on whole wheat English muffins, split. Pizza sauce, fresh tomatoes, onions, vegan crumbles, other veggies if they're in the fridge, jalapenos. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning or oregano. Even my omnivore hubby will eat pizza this way. I've never been a big cheese person so don't really miss the cheese. I'll sprinkle some vegan cheese on his sometimes.

If I'm being lazy I get the Amy's GF Rice Crust Spinach and soy cheese pizza. I add toppings that I like as well after baking. Really delicious. If I'm making my own I either do it on a GF tortilla or Bob's Red Mill has a good GF pizza crust mix and I top it with tons of veggies (zucchini, mushrooms, olives, onion, garlic, artichokes, spinach) and pasta sauce.

Wow! i got some good ideas...and new pizzas i never even thought of! so lets see we use long time whole wheat dough, short time whole wheat, flour tortilla, whole wheat english muffins, and bread dough from the store to make pie!! i have to try the flour tortilla. In fact i have some great whole wheat wraps that might work! Low carb and everything. i never thought of the tortilla.. i always thought of them as casa deas.. some thing i never had anyway...multi use! not quite as filling tho.. perhaps with a salad or something else... Then for sauces we have tomato, pesto w/tomato and hummus. Very interesting! It will take me a long time to try these combos.. I guess your only limit is your imagination and of course allergies for some of you. Thanks for the replies!

I use Pillsbury Pizza Crust and brush with olive oil and crushed garlic. Then sprinkle with Daiya vegan mozzarella, sliced roma tomatoes, red onion, and salt. Bake at 425 for about 15-20 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Top with fresh basil and enjoy!

lately, I have been craving pizza alot, and I am not sure why because I also crave mexican food (veg. burritos). But lately it has been pizza. So I make a whole wheat pizza crust in my bread machine. When it's finished, I roll it out and top it with tom. sauce, veggies, and plop it into the oven. Don't even miss the cheese, nor does my family, which makes me happy!

Interesting topic. I buy a thin base I like and then put whatever veggies I have in the house on it. I have had cauliflower, brocolli, spinich, courgettes etc., all diced up. Of course, prior to this week it would have been topped off with cheese. Whle I am motivated and am not going back to cheese the thought of it still makes me want to eat it. It hasnt been long enough for me to cheese detox yet. Is anyone else still struggling with the cheese thing

kiwi.. try thinking of cheese as greasy fat.. 100% fat.. Think of it with a slight yellow/orange tinge.. and the grease so thick on top in puddles that you have to soak it up with a napkin. actually once you make a few things that used to have cheese.. and you get them to taste as good or even better than with cheese.. you probably won't miss it..!

One of our favorite summertime pizzas is to take some of hubby's homemade whole wheat tortillas and pop them on the grill (or over a campfire on a rack) and top with sauce, veggies, cheese for the non vegans, etc and let them get crispy and yummy. --Deb R

my honey likes to cook pizza on the grill too.. when he first did that.. i thought he was nuts.. but it comes out good.. as long as he doesn't try to hurry. his thing with cooking is he gets impatient.. so he turns up the heat determined it will get done sooner.. and forget waiting to heat up the oven.. there are times i have to shoo him out of the kitchen.. lol

We make pizza all the time now - it's our favorite "junk" food since going vegan. We make homemade pesto with basil, walnuts (instead of parmesan), and tons of garlic. Blend that with some fresh tomatoes for the sauce, which only takes a minute or two. I love carmelized onions, so we slice up a red onion (very thinly), brown them until some are almost crisp. We do the same with thin slices of zucchini or baby eggplant. Add mushrooms, more basil, and fresh spinach and you have a gourmet pizza that you'd pay $25 for at a restaurant. I even put figs on one the other night to see what it would taste like and it was so wonderful! We don't use Daiya on our pizzas, but will sprinkle a bit of nutritional yeast on top. If you're having a hard time transitioning away from cheese, I suggest making a pizza using the freshest vegetables and herbs you can find. It may seem counter-intuitive to spend money and time on what we think of as a quick meal, but the end result is really amazing. They will taste so good that you will just think of cheese as something that smothers the flavor. It will completely change the way you view cheese, which is a lot to ask of a pizza
