Depleted Iron Stores
Posted Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 5:40 PM

As part of my routine check up at the doctor I had some blood tests done and the nurse called to say my iron stores are depleted and do I want a supplement. I'd prefer not to take one - any suggestions? Thanks.

I had iron deficiency anemia with my last pregnancy and also when I was a pre-teen. My OB told me to eat lots of greens, beans, blackstrap molasses, dried fruit and pumpkin seeds. Also, make sure you have something with vitamin C in it along with whatever you're eating because the vitamin C helps your body absorb more iron. Also, try to cut back on or eliminate caffeine, as it inihibits your body's ability to absorb dietary iron.

Good luck! Smile

If you take the supplement, be sure to take it long enough to build your storage. You can get a good blood test, but if your storage is low you will become anemic again. I spent a long time going up and down because my doctor didn't account for this.
