Not losing weight :(
Posted Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 6:10 AM
I have been going vegan since May. I have been on the 21 Kickstart 8 days so far. I have not eaten anything I should not have since being on the Kickstart. I am NOT losing weight!!!! In actuality, I have gained about 12 pounds. What am I doing wrong? I know at first I was eating the wrong types of veggie foods. I was eating too many nuts and non-chocolate trail mix. I was also eating potato chips and "non-meat or dairy" junk food. I have not done that this week. When will the weight start coming off?

I know that is discouraging and I am no expert on vegan eating, actually just started it last week. But I do think sometimes when you've had things that isn't necessarily 'weight reduction' type foods - such as some of the things you mentioned -- it does take a bit for that to get out of your system. My suggestion is to keep on doing this, stick to the healthy things and give it some more time. For me, trail mix is my all time favorite, but it is a killer for losing weight and I have stayed away from it, at least for now. Good luck and just keep trying! Oh, and I hate to say this dirty word, but exercise is a big help, too!

Processed foods also contain a lot of sodium which retains water....just a thought

If you're sticking to the kickstart, especially getting plenty of the leafies that are all over the menu, it'll take about 2 weeks from when you started to really see the difference. All that other 'stuff' has to work itself out (that's why some folks feel bloated, gassy, have digestive stuff going on) - that's the innards working on clearing things out of the way. I know that even now, after several kickstarts, if I skimp on the greens and fall back on lots of whole grains (even good stuff like quinoa), I'll feel it and I'll start to see a weight creep. Then I know to be firm about getting the greens in - even something as simple as adding a tossed salad to lunch and/or dinner most days of the week (unless the meal already has lots of greens like kale and chard and spinach). And poof the creep stops and reverses itself again. --Deb R

I'm with you. Vegan for a while now, but with a tendency to eat too many treats (I think of myself as eating in a "mostly-whole-foods" way, but if I write it all down, I see the peanut butter and soy ice cream and restaurant meals adding up to slow weight gain, though the fairly reasonable amounts of all these I eat wouldn't have when I was younger. But I guess I'm not younger anymore!) Salads with/before every meal really are a huge help. And/or vegetable soups -- mostly nonstarchy vegetables. For me, it's useful to combine some of those ideas of the Joel Fuhrman Eat to Live programwith the Kickstart, though the Kickstart is easier for me because it has more flexibility. If one meal, either lunch or dinner, is DIY, mostly a huge salad with beans and balsamic or oil-free dressing (and interesting vegetables, plus maybe a sprinkle of Parma or a few seeds) or a big bowl of vegetable soup with beans or tofu, that makes a difference. And enough variety in the seasoning of the soup/beans/dressing makes the difference between boring meals or meals that feel like you're having Malaysian or Cajun or Chinese or Mexican food. A few of us have mentioned, in another thread, Isa Chandra Moskowitz's bowl instructions and recipes in Appetite for Reduction. Think those are useful too for having a lot of variety, which always helps. Then, even if it takes a while for the weight loss to happen, meanwhile we're getting all the health benefits of a plant-based died, and the happiness of opting out of the terrible cruelties of the factory farming system, while not feeling deprived.

oh, also, WATER! Drink plenty of water. It seems counterintuitive sometimes if you suspect that retaining water is one of the factors in not losing (or even gaining) weight. But adding more water - no caffeine, no calorie, liquids (100% herbal no caffeine tea or plain old water; not regular or decaf tea or coffee, juice, etc) will actually allow your body to go ahead and release water. It's all about how efficient the body can be in protecting itself. If it suspects that water is in short supply, it'll hold onto every drop it can find. Likewise, if calories are in short supply (eating too little for your needs), it'll hold onto every morsel. Both will lead to weight gain. Drinking plenty of water allows the body to relax about holding onto fluids; eating adequate calories for your needs allows it to get out of 'famine' mode and burn those calories faster. --Deb R

Hi- I find I gain weight when I binge and eat non-vegan foods, or too many processed vegan foods like peanut butter, or fake "meats" and "cheeses." To give some examples. I also have been known to nearly polish off a bag of potato chips in one sitting before it is forcibly taken away from me. Yeah. Embarrassing. I don't buy soy ice "cream" anymore due to the fact that I binge on it, but I do buy Edy's Whole Fruit popsicles b/c they are vegan and single-serving at least, and there's no fat just natural sugar. Anyway I don't eat them often. I guess what I'd say to the OP is maybe you can find substitutes for the foods you like, or eat them in smaller portions. Emerald 100-cal nut packs are good substitutes for trail mix, and they're high in protein. Also, this has been said to me and maybe it will work for you (it hasn't for me, yet, but I'm getting there) is find something - somebody mentioned exercise - maybe it's a sport, a hobby, maybe take an exercise class and meet some new people and maybe you can lose weight and have fun too! Best of luck! ~fadedstar

I am stuck, too. I was in Idaho last week and walked lots - was down 2 lbs when I returned. The next day I was back up 2 lbs. Wow- maybe the humidity weighs more I do believe that exercise is the key for me. I had a colleague a few years younger than me had a heart attack last week. Wow, that was a wake up call, but also made me feel good about the changes I have made in my life. They have to make some lifestyle changes. So, makes we want to exercise more=)
