Now you are vegan, has anyone noticed that the gas caused by an increase in all of those beans is different to that caused by a meat diet?

I am not referring to the amount but to the smell or lack of. Bean gas - not so noticable. meat eaters gas - smells like dead rotten flesh.

Rather have the plant food any day.

lol, Kiwi... yes, I've noticed. Though I have a little *more* of the aforementioned, it is definitely far less odorous. What a relief. And trips to the restroom are quite a bit more pleasant as well!

Haha, this is a topic that's rarely discussed, but there's a t-shirt out there that reflects our humor:

We've noticed it - and that there's not as much bean gas as there used to be as our systems have gotten used to the higher fiber content. Even my omnivore 13 yr old won't eat certain non-veg foods because he knows what effect they have on his innards (stinky gas and such like). My hubby uses a CPAP machine for apnea. The air being forced in leads to gassiness first thing in the morning when he wakes up. But, with a plant-based eating pattern, it's not the disgusting nose hair curling output it used to be.

I've noticed I can eat beans all the time with very minimal gas.

If you eat chili for instance or anything with "beans & meat"......whoa...now that will produce some nasty gas.

I had trouble when I first started the vegan diet with lots of stomach gas etc. I cut down on the "wheat" which I've found out I'm sensitive to and it helped quite a bit. Any new dietary change takes some time for you body to adjust

Hey Kiwi - interesting observations!

If there is digestive disturbance, it's good to get to the bottom of it. At the same time, once acute issues are solved, we can face the fact that a high fiber, whole-foods, plant-based diet is going to be a bit 'airier' than before. Over at McDougall, we call it "mcbuggling" - Laughing

Thanks for the tips. I am sure there are many work colleagues of vegan eaters who would thank you if they only knew. Unfortunately although I work in an office I dont have a printer at my desk. I have to find other noise distractions. Its a big open office that gets pretty noisy when everyone gets on the phone and such so there are moments - although not always when you want or need them.

The funny thing is, whenever I run into one of my old school teachers, the loss of odor in my gas is always the first thing they comment on.
