Help with Capers
Posted Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 5:26 PM

I was wondering if anyone here uses capers? I have had them before and really liked them, then again I have had them in some dishes/salads & they make me gag.

Are there different types? Better brands?

I'll appreciate any suggestions! Thanks.

My husband loves capers. He gets them out and sprinkles them on any dish that I make that he doesn't care for. (No capers, the dish is a success). I don't care for them, so I would just buy the cheaper brand until he asked me to buy the ones that are smaller. He claims they taste better.

the best capers are packed in salt not brine. they need to be soaked 2 or 3 times, to get rid of the salt.

@legumeveggie Thank you for the info. I did read that the smaller ones are supposedly a finer pick & are usually French vs the larger Italian ones. So now I will hunt out the smaller ones.

@marge Thanks. I was a bit confused over the packing since I have seen both salt or brine packed on the label. It's good to know to wash them 3 times. I have a feeling my aversion to them may have been when they had not been rinsed and just plopped into the dish.

Thanks!!!
