Loose bowels??
Posted Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 5:52 PM

I truly hate diving into this question but has anyone been experiencing loose bowels? I have been vegan for approx. 6 weeks. In the beginning, I would go about three times a day. However in the past three days, I am only going in the morning and it's very loose. Embarassed

That's pretty typical. Remember, all that fiber you're eating is going right through pretty much, not sitting around compacting the way meat and dairy tend to do. As long as it's not sick-like diarrhea, it's probably not any kind of problem.

Doesn't sound like anything to worry about as long as you are staying hydrated.

I was thinking about broaching this subject as well. My stools have been very loose, almost diarrhea-like. And they haven't been very satisfying. It almost always feels like more could come out but doesn't. At first it was more like cow plops or soft serve ice cream, but now it's more like salad shooter. I liked the cow plops better.

Nyssa,
My boyfriend, who is a fairly recent semi-convert to this way of eating (he's still eating some fried/bad-vegetarian stuff) has been experiencing the same thing you described. We can't figure it out, either, but he's really frustrated.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Y'all might also look into the fruit/veg ratio - if you're eating lots of fruits (or fruit juices and smoothies) and not as much fibrous veggies, that might be a bit of a problem. Likewise, if you've got a lot of fruits and veggies and very little in the way of more solid things like beans and grains, that could be a contributor as well. It's all about finding the balance that works well for you. In the meantime, rice and banana are both a bit more binding than things like pears or apples. There's the well known "BRAT" plan for stomach flu like issues (diarrhea etc) - banana, rice, apple sauce, toast (dry).

I understand if someone is shocked by a sudden regular case of looser bowels, but unless it is diarrhea (can't control the release time) or food dumping (going to the bathroom and clearly releasing something you ate only moments before), I wouldn't worry about it from a medical standpoint.

However, for diarrhea, the BRAT rule-of-thumb above is a good one. Refined grains can be helpful like crackers or the aforementioned toast. Here is an excerpt from our website too:

Diarrhea
When experiencing problems with diarrhea, it can be very helpful to emphasize rice and well–cooked green, yellow, and orange vegetables, while avoiding dairy products. Small portions of nuts or nut butters, if tolerated well, may also slow down the gastrointestinal tract.

Thanks everyone! I am thinking maybe I was eating more greens and less rice and beans like I was doing. You are all so awesome!
