Diverticulitis?
Posted Monday, January 25, 2010 at 10:10 AM

So for the 21 days everything was great and then Thursday morning I suddenly develop this pain/tenderness in my side after using the bathroom. I'd had a similar pain many times several months back, but just for an hour or so each time. I just attributed it to getting older and maybe being part of a larger pattern of 'inflammation' related health issues.

This time, though, it came back after lunch and the pain didn't go away. I went to the doctor on Friday and he told me it was probably Diverticulitis. His office is supposed to call me back when they get insurance approval for some scans.

He told me to avoid spicy and fatty foods and get plenty of vegetables and fiber. Ok, so I might have indulged in some stress related french-fry & dr. pepper consumption, but this is the healthiest I've ever eaten in my life! Why now?

Most of the websites I consulted advised against eating nuts & seeds even though they also noted there was no scientific evidence to back up that recommendation. My mother (who goes to the doctor for a living, literally) also claims I should avoid broccoli because of the florets and lettuce for some unfathomable reason.

Does anyone on this forum have real experience and knowledge on this condition?

Here's a link to Disease Proof re: inflammatory bowel conditions (which would include diverticulitis). http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/cat-digestive-health.html

In that post there's also a link to Dr. Fuhrman's newsletter on IFB. Probably some good info in there. Smile

There's also a page on Nutrition MD here: http://www.nutritionmd.org/consumers/gastrointestinal/diverticular.html

I think "diverticulitis" is a general term to describe inflammation in the colon, and that there are a number of possible causes, which I guess is what the screens your doc is suggesting will determine.

My mom has had this, off and on, because of ulcerative colitis. She unfortunately has a high sugar and high-fat diet style (even if I've been able to turn her *mostly* vegan after her breast cancer diagnosis a year ago). Those are the two things that are always mentioned, and she does much better--in fact, can go a long time without symptoms--when she keeps her diet in check.

It seems like a low-fat vegan diet is actually the right track. "Why now?" indeed. Hope you don't get too frustrated.

Feel better soon!

Maybe the "why now" is bacause you've been eating so healthy for the past 21 days, your body was getting use to it and learning to love it, then you gave it french fries and Dr. Pepper and it went "WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS???"

I'm semi joking, but who knows, it could be that simple!

Diverticulosis refers to pouches that form in the colon. Diverticulitis is an inflammation of those pouches.

My aunt claims tomato seeds irritate her's. I've never had diverticulitis so I don't know whether I have those pouches.

My understanding is the pouches come from constipation and staining.

I think most of the "irritants" information is going to be from anecdotal sources. You will probably have to discover what causes your problems.

Thanks for the info everybody. There were some statistics and advice on the NutritionMD site that I didn't see on WebMD so that was very helpful. Guess I need to hit the treadmill and just keep watching what I eat.
