Alas......the 21 days are over
Posted Monday, January 25, 2010 at 1:05 PM
Alas the 21 days are over (my husband and I started 4 days late). So what does he do? Last night (our last day) he pulls out a bag of frozen chicken thighs to cook for dinner tonight. I couldn't believe it! He says he wants to get rid of what is in the freezer and then focus on a more vegetable based diet (so as not to waste what we already have). Im not doing it!!!!!! I am enjoying the new way of cooking and eating. I feel to compromise now would be sabotage. I have not found it difficult at all with the exception of going out to eat. Some good low fat dessert receipes would be welcome though. I now understand why so many people in the forums have suggested bringing snacks with them wherever they go. Sometimes finding whole foods is difficult. Go figure! Well.............thanks for listening to me let out some steam.

The week we went from omnivore to vegetarian the dogs ate like kings. The week we made the decision to go vegan from vegetarian, the dogs ate like kings again. They enjoyed it so much we continue to make their food using eggs. But we don't touch the stuff.

This is just too funny. Your additional family members must be very happy indeed! I think any of those enhancements to our kitty's diet would lead to a large vet bill (just our luck). I will share with my husband who may not find amusing. I, however, thank you for the advise, suggestion and huge laugh!

Thanks to you all for adding the humor to my day. I do have a cat that is huge and deaf..did not give any of my food to him but unloaded everything in my freezer and pantry to my neighbor. I could not justify wasting all the food and the $ to purchase it either even though my vegan MD suggested doing just that! My neighbor was more than happy to take it all!. Yes, I agree it would be nice to have a good dessert once in a while..anybody out there have any 'tried and true' recipes you would like to share besides baked apples

Can it be any worse for the cat than what they put in the can? I mean, people grade food is way cleaner than the stuff the FDA doesn't even look at. My dogs for example look like they took Charles Atlas' course on physical culture. I just wish they didn't have so much energy.

Gramma check out my site for a brownie recipe. It lists sugar, but we stopped using it a long time ago. The only difference is they taste like "dark chocolate" brownies. Add some chopped walnuts for the bomb. I suggest letting them set in the fridge over night. Brownies that survive the first day are always the best.

Well....................my husband got a good laugh too! Although I don't believe it swayed or persuaded him not to "Finish" the meat. He agrees with Veganreceipeguy about the junk they put in pet food. He's pretty well versed in it because he use to work for Hills Pet Nutrition or commonly known as Science Diet. I don't know....our cat doesn't like people salmon or turkey. What can I say.............of course we adopted a weird cat. Par for the course. I will check out the brownies and bought everything today for the mac and cheese. Hey....maybe the cat would like it!

Hi there: Well, I thought you all may be interested to know that my husband cooked that chicken last night. In fact, he smoked it and then proceeded to eat 5 pieces! So this morning we wake up and he can't even look at me because he finally has to admit that he has a serious stomach ache. Imagine that! He took the whole lot of chicken and chucked it in the green bin. When he got home from work he said he felt sick all day. Then he showed me (excitedly) all his finds he picked up from the natural food store on his way home. None of which included animal products. HHHHHHHHHmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I remember the last time I was on the vegan diet and I ate meat for the first time after 7 months. Was cooking sausage for my husband's breakfast and decided it smelled kind of good. After partaking of 1 little link, boy was I sick to my stomach all day! You were asking about some dessert recipes. I bought a cookbook entitled "The Joy of Vegan Cooking" by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau. She has many good cookie, breads, pies and desserts. Of course you don't want to go overboard on desserts, even if they are "vegan". If you've been a big "sweet" eater it's good to have some treats now and then. I saw Alicia Silverstone on Oprah yesterday. She had some of Alicia's cookies made up from her new cookbook, "The Kind Diet". They looked really yummy and Oprah said they were. That's my next cookbook purchase. Have been wanting it since I read her pages etc. on the 21-day kickstart. At least your husband had a guick reality check. So great when the two of you can do program "together". The people that were the most successful and stuck with the program I went through several years ago, were the ones who went through it together. My husband is eating his usual SAD diet outside of the house, but I'm only cooking vegan here. He's been pretty good about most of the meals. Every now and then there's one he's not crazy about. I just make sure he has some of his canned soups etc. around that he can make up quickly.

Yes..................it is success! Although I love when Im right, it is my concern for him that I celebrate this victory. We both watched the Oprah show yesterday because Alicia was going to be on it. So I know the cookies you speak of. My husband was totally tripped out about the foods they were discussing. I must admit that although I know quite a bit about about the slaughter houses, I didn't realize children drank more soda than milk! Wow.....that is astonishing and very sad. I will check out the cook book you suggested. Im not a big sweet person but I do have a daughter who I would like to prove to that you can eat healthier food and be satisfied. I made her these peanut butter rice crispy treats from the Vegan Mom web site and she loved them. I am having a harder time coming up with things that she will eat than my husband. I am on a waiting list at our local library for the Kind Life so I am excited to check that out. Alicia has great energy that I aspire to.

Hey, if you got your husband to do 17 days vegan, that's awesome!!! I would love to get my dad to do even just 21 days all vegan as he has major health issues but I know it's nearly impossible. So at least you've made a start. Good for you for sticking to your guns and not giving in. Perhaps if you do the March 21 days with your husband (if he agrees) he will be less inclined to go for those chicken wings once it's over . Tam
