I have been vegetarian since just before I became pregant for my first child (seven years ago). I have not completely raised my children vegan but very close to it since birth. I am proud to say my six year old is a super energetic and healthly beautiful girl. The book that helped me was one from the PCRM called Healthy Eating for Life for Children.
From the time my children went on to food I pureed legumes for them and made many healthy veggie soups. Today my girl, although allowed to make her own choices, eats a mostly vegetarian diet.
Feel good about the choices you are making for your children - you will see it shine through in them!!

Susan Levin posted some links to VegFamily in answer to a similar question. I don't have kids, so I'm not all that familiar with the site, but it's very popular. Smile

I do know the most recent annual position papers on vegetarian diets from the American Dietetic Association say that "well-planned vegan diets are appropriate for all stages of life, including infancy, pregnancy," etc.

There's a chapter on vegan nutrition for children in Becoming Vegan, a totally awesome book by two RDs, Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina.

Hope that helps. I wish I'd been vegan all my life! Lucky kids! Smile

You can certainly raise your kids to be vegan! I have a very good friend who grew up vegan (from birth - other than breastmilk, of course Wink) and she's one of the healthiest people I know. She runs marathons and actually just qualified for the Boston Marathon a few months ago. She has a 2-year-old daughter that she's raising on a vegan diet, as well, and her daughter is right in the middle of the growth charts for height and weight. My friend's brother and his family are also still vegan, though I haven't kept in touch with him.

My son has a friend who is almost vegan - he's Indian and he and his family eat basically vegan, though they do eat dairy products - for religious reasons. They are all really healthy, as well. It seems like none of them ever get sick, compared to others in my son's class. LOL

I would think since you weren't raised vegan, then you should get a good reference book or two, just to be sure you're getting all the essential nutrients into your child's diet, and work from there.

Good luck! Very Happy
