Why can't I see it?
Posted Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 9:28 AM

Before vegan: Weight = 310
After vegan: Weight = 280

So why can't I see it? My clothes hang a bit better, but not so I'm down a size or anything. That pair of jeans still won't button and hangs in my closet, mocking me. I stare at myself in the mirror, and there's still the same number of chins looking back at me...I would have thought 30 pounds would get rid of at least one of those! If it wasn't for the scale, I wouldn't believe I had lost pound 1! Is all the fat coming off the inside, off my internal organs? I guess that's a good thing, but I'd still like to see more visible results.

Oh, one ego boost: this morning I was able to put on a ring I had retired years ago. Yay for skinny fingers.

Congrats on your weight loss!!!
I bet you can see it - we are our toughest critics after all. Imagine what you will feel like and look like if you continue with the program!

The skin and stuff still need to shrink - it's been stretched way out all these years to fit what was underneath. That's where toning exercises can be helpful in getting things back into shape again. It will slowly shrink back (for the most part) but toning will up the pace a little bit. It need not be long hot and sweaty exercise - a little bit of walking, a little bit of stretching, maybe some yoga type stuff if that's something you enjoy (or might want to try - I'm waiting for the budget space to pick up a DVD of a yoga for arthritis program - my knees can't handle a lot of the kneeling-type yoga poses and hubby can't balance on one leg due to hip damage - yoga for arthritis generally allows for adapting to doing poses seated or leaning as needed).

Focus on your health. Focus on the great food you are feeding your body. Focus on how much better you feel, how much better your body functions. Let the weight loss be a bonus!

The chins WILL go away. The jeans WILL fit again. But in the meantime you're gaining health!!

When I lost weight, it took several months before it was noticeable. The skin did take awhile to tighten up, and when one is of a larger size, it takes larger weight loss for it to be more apparent. Take heart, OTHER people are noticing it more than you are. Wink

Exercise (cardio) and do some weights/strength training with dumbbells, machines if you go to a gym, or even bands, or your cans of beans in your cupboards. If you do this it will help tighten up so your skin won't sag when you have lost the weight. Smile

Marlene, you sound like me - the weight comes off all over which makes it a little less detectable to the eye. Rest assured that nonetheless it IS happening!

As others noted, the mirror can play tricks and take a snapshot to get a more objective view. Do you have a 'before' pic somewhere?

Also, exercise will help with creating more muscle tone and skin health. You need some kind of resistance training, some flexibility training, and some cardivascular exercise. You can get them all within the same workout, or mix them up over the course of the week. Are you walking? You don't mention your activity in your post so hard to know your starting point.

And congrats on the weight loss!

Marlene, as others mentioned about their experiences, I had the same happen when I started losing weight when I was at 230 pounds. Funny thing, when I had lost about 40 pounds, people started asking me if I was ill because I had lost weight "so fast." Actually, it wasn't that fast and I wasn't ill. It just takes some time for the body to show the results of our work.

One suggestion I have is to take your measurements. Some weeks, that kept me going when nothing else would. I got into a pattern of either losing weight or inches, rarely both at the same time.

Hang in there. That 30 pound loss is fantastic! You are closer than you imagine to that smaller size. The only way you won't get there is if you give up.

Ireme insisted the same thing, until I posted this photo comparison on the documentary Facebook page:

Take a picture now so you can look at it later.

Now, 30 pounds is only 10% so be patient, but I can assure you that everyone else notices already and you will soon. It isn't magic that the ring fits.

"It isn't magic that the ring fits".

Madeline, that was exactly what I needed to hear!

You guys are the best. And I know I need to face the e-word ("exercise") soon. <girding loins>

Marelene - Congratulations on your 30 lb loss!!! Thats fantastic. I hope my story helps somehow.

I lost 35 lbs from last March (mid march) until June -then gained 5 over the summer and have lost that again, so when this Kickstart began I was still down the 35 lbs. No one really noticed the weight loss and like you I had some rings fit again, but my clothes weren't "hanging off of me" like I would have expected.

Then, I started water exercise/aerobics 30-60 min a day 5 days a week and WOW... what a difference! Weight is the same, but a jacket I could barely close even after losing 35 lbs, I can now close AND over lap the fabric around the stomach! Everyone is now commenting on the weight loss. I have only lost a few more pounds since then so I know the difference is due to the water exercises. T-Shirts that were just fitting then are now being used for loose "nightgowns."

Water is so relaxing for me that it doesn't feel like a workout. Smile I decided to do it for my health and not care what I looked like to others. I needed some form of exercise and due to needing a knee replacement, water workouts are the only way I can do it. I put on a pair of swim shorts and a t-shirt and got busy! If you take to water exercises I highly recommend purchasing a pair of foam hand weights and gradually use them for longer and longer periods during your workout as they really add alot of resistance and help with toning.

My main focus for this is HEALTH - the rest is a bonus. When you start building muscle through the exercise this should also help burn the calories and you mentally feel good too. I would like to lose another 80 lbs and after my knee replacement I hope to be able to add in another form of exercise.

Keep up the good work.

Dee
