Sleepless in San Diego...
Posted Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 11:00 PM
Hi all, I stopped eating meat and all animal products 11 days ago. For the past week, I have not been sleeping more than 3 or 4 hours per night. I may fall asleep while wacthing TV and when I get in the bed, I can not fall back to sleep. The weird thing is that I am not sleepy or groggy the next day. Has anyone else had this issue?

Did you sleep longer when you ate meat? Even when i ate meat, i would normally sleep 6-8 hours. 6 most of the time. after stopping meat.. it's about the same..but i have a lot more energy while i am awake. i run circles around most people..i can go and go.. at night it's no big deal to get off the couch and go do something... lots of long lasting energy. Also i don't have the aches and pains getting out of bed..no stiffness, unless honey laid on me. i notice i don't sleep well or long if i have a glass of wine at night. i don't sleep well if i get cold, if my husband snores in my ear, or i am hungry. It could be a lot of other things besides stopping meat??

This reminds me of Tony Robbins, a motivational speaker. He sleeps very little but claims to have an abundance of energy regardless. I personally am not one of those people, but surely it is possible.

Thank you for the responses. After doing more research, I've found that it could be a variety of things.....including stress and hormones. I have never had any problem sleeping. Just glad that the change in my eating habits may have been the reason that I was not groggy while sleeping less. I was able to get 7.5 hours last night of uninterrupted sleep whereas for the past week, I was awake to see every hour on the clock! URG! In doing research, I found that by taking vitamin B-12 and/or calcium or maybe having a small meal before bedtime would allow me to sleep. Thanks again!

I know what your saying -- When I watch what I am eating for a while my metabolism will definitely make a shift. It's quite amazing and I get a lot of energy, require a lot less sleep and don't seem to eat as often (my house is going to get real clean soon It's an adjustment to my lifestyle, but definitely a good one. To help with the sleep patterns maybe just work toward setting the alarm sooner - also exercising helps make me able to relax at night.

Sleepless: How about an update. Are you sleeping regularly or are you still sleepless? I ask because I find that I still have extra energy and am not sleeping like usual. I'm usually sound asleep by now -- instead I am watching TV and on the net.

**UPDATE** I am thrilled to announce that I am sleeping like a baby once again! I spoke to a good friend about an issue that had been bothering me more that I cared to admit and once I got it off my chest, was heard and validated, I was able to return to sweet slumber. Although I was only sleeping for 2 or 3 hours per night, I was never groggy. I suppose that due to the diet, I had much more energy than before. I did some research and started taking a B-12 supplement and a banana or two per day for calcium. Both are supposed to help you to sleep. Good night!!!
