alcohol?
Posted Monday, April 18, 2011 at 12:57 PM

I never considered myself to have a problem with alcohol, but I've noticed that I got into the habit of having wine with dinner and a glass afterward. Anyone else out there trying to cut back/eliminate alcohol consumption? I know this is major factor for not seeing the scale move..

I have 2-3 glasses of wine (red wine glass not fish bowl)
per week & I have found that it helps increase the Y-chromosome carrying set's chance of survival in this menopausal household. Not no intention of giving it up even for the scale.

Yeah, I'm with Fiji, I'm not giving up my wine or coffee...two of life's little pleasures!! However, something I started doing a while back, is when I feel like wine( I do not drink beer or hard liquor), I start with a half glass( normal wine glass). If I really want more, then I pour another half glass. Usually I am satisfied with the first half glass. I know if I pour the whole glass, I will drink it.

I miss my glass of wine as I am trying to loose some weight and I know its extra calories. Now its just for special occasions and social events such as a birthday.

What I have learned since going vegan is that many wines aren't, due to using milk or fish in the processing. I have found a lovely vegan wine from an organic winery that is endorsed by the Vegetarian Society here in New Zealand. What could be better! The good news is that this wine is a little more expensive than a lot of wines being sold at present. I can't afford to buy a lot of it so it keeps temptation and calories down Smile. The bad news is that I cant afford to buy a lot of it Sad

I think the concerns over wine come down to what type of vegan you are. I am a nutritional vegan, doing this for my health not for ethical reasons. The idea of animal products being used during the filtering process does not have any real affect on my decision to or not drink wine. Although it was surprising when I found out all of the different animal products that could be used during this process, I feel very comfortable in the fact that these 'byproducts' are being utilized not wasted. I detest waste above all else, and if you are going to end something’s life, be it plant or animal, you need to be sure that every scrap is used efficiently and as completely as possible. But that is just my opinion.

good advice here. I think I'll try the 1/2 glass trick to start. The thought of only buying vegan wines is interesting too. That would bring my consumption down as I have not even thought of it. I'll do a little research and see what's available and reasonably priced in my area. But for now- I like the idea of 1/2 glass or drinking from smaller glasses. Coffee for me was something that I had to wean myself to 1 cup in the morning, and that took a while. I just have to remember to be patient with myself. These changes take a while to become habits. I think this 21 day kickstart reminds me of that daily. Every winter I slip into the same habits that tip the scales out of my favor. So - time for some new and improved habits.

I have not given up wine or coffee either...

When I am watching the scale I add a little Perrier to my wine. My reasons for eating a vegan diet is mostly environmental/health - I drink local wine.

For those interested, here is a website that tells you what beer, wine or liquor beverages are vegan or not. There are plenty of vegan ones to choose from if you are so inclined.

I gave up alcohol about 7 years ago and life, post alcohol, is way better than it was when I was drinking. It took years to get there but I have no regrets.

Coffee has been really challenging as well. For the past 2 years I've been drinking on average 1 cup a week. But sometimes I slip into drinking coffee everyday.

Ideally I've love to be both alcohol and caffeine free. But it may take me another decade to give up drinking green tea.

Hi Vegteacher - I too got into the habit of wine every night with dinner. I was drinking about 2 glasses each night. When I started the Kickstart (now on day 27), I gave up alcohol completely, just to see how I would do. It has been very hard replacing the wine habit, but I am down 6.5 lbs. I had not seen the scale move before on any diet, as long as I was still drinking. I am 43, and only 5'1", so this has been a great weight loss for me. It's hard, but try to stop, if you want to lose weight. You will be amazed how much more food you can eat, and how you will still lose weight! Good luck!

Green tea still contains caffeine - anything that uses tea leaves, coffee beans, cocoa beans, cola, has caffeine to varying degrees. If the one's goal is to remove caffeine completely then no coffee, tea (made with tea leaves, 100% herbals are a different matter), and chocolate are out.

We can get decaffinated (caffeine free) tea and coffee here in New Zealand for those who do not want caffeine for health or religious reasons since it is considered a drug by many. The taste is the same just no caffine. It may be available in the US if you look. I'd be surprised if it is not.

"Decaffeinated" is not the same as caffeine free - decaffeinated products have less caffeine than regular - typically the packages say 98% or 99% caffeine free - that leaves 1%-2% caffeine still in there. Only things that never had caffeine are actually completely caffeine free - for example, chamomile tea made with only chamomile flowers or mint tea made with only mint leaves. Never had cafffeine, never will.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/10/11/health/webmd/main2081503.shtml ""The important point is that decaffeinated is not the same as caffeine-free," says Roland Griffiths, PhD, a professor of behavioral biology and neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, in the news release."
