Magic bullet - Worth it?
Posted Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 9:45 AM

I currently own a blender that I have been using to make my smoothies and it does an okay job at crushing ice. I also have like an 1970's 1-cup food processor that couldn't chop a nut for the life of it. So I usually end up with grainy nuts and such when adding to soups or sauces.

I cook a lot (love to) and I make lots of soups and smoothies and want to try and start making green smoothies. I am not ready to invest in a juicer just yet. Do you think investing in the magic bullet would work better at making the smoothies and food processed items?

Please help!

Hey Jen!

A Magic Bullet would no doubt give more oomph to your "green" project! Regular blenders can really take a beating. But then I'm spoiled, I inherited an old Vitamix 3600 and it's a real workhorse!

But ice in a regular blender can burn them out. I don't have a Magic Bullet, but I do know people who swear by them! I'm sure someone who has one will come by with some thoughts.

I just bought the Magic Bullet over the weekend. Haven't tried it yet but have heard very good things about them. I'll do something with it today and give a report.

PS my old blender is nearly 38 years old. Bought it to make baby food for my second child. Still going strong but that horrible harvest gold color and beat up case just gets harder and harder to look at--How times and tastes change.

We had a Magic Bullet and it only lasted a year. When I got serious about eating right last year, I splurged on the Vitamix and don't know how we lived without it! It definitely has a higher pricetag, but if you use it daily (or several times daily as we do in our house), then it is worth it knowing it's not going to go up in smoke (literally!) on us after a short time.

We have a Magic Bullet and it has worked great for milkshakes and margaritas! I guess I need to dust it off and start using it for healthy smoothies instead! But for the price, it does work great! I like that you just mix up your drink in the container you will drink from and don't have a bunch of extra stuff to clean up like with a food processor or regular blender.

I have the Magic Bullet - have had it a for years - use it frequently - I love it and so do my friends who own one now because they liked mine. Once I thought it was broken, I purchased a new one, then realized that the mechanism needed to be wiped off and it has worked well ever since - I put the new one away and will get it out when this one REALLY breaks. I also own a super duper blender but clean up isn't fun. It is rarely used now.

I had a Magic Bullet and it worked fine. Container was too small for making smoothies for 2. After a couple years the smoothies weren't quite as smooth as they had once been. I now have a Vitamix and I LOVE it. I can make enough smoothie for both of us. No matter what I put in, it is totally smooth.

I am surpised of the good response for the Bullet. I hadn't heard good things.

I can't afford a vitamix, so I went to Walmart and bought a 68$ blender that crushed ice. It makes my green smoothies but I don't think it still does as good as it should because i get a sore throat when I drink them.

To me that must mean that it isn't smooth enough? I'm not sure? Has anyone else heard of this problem? kc

Hi, The Oster 14-speed I bought on sale at Sears was worth the investment, and I might prefer it to a Vitamix, because it is quiet.

The slowest speeds, surprisingly, are the ones which come in handy to grab lettuce and greens or fruit without too much tamping.

This morning and the last four mornings I make a green smoothie with 5 oz unsweetened vanilla Almond milk, 5 oz organic romaine heart, roughly chopped and washed, 3 oz of frozen mango (thanx, Lani), 2 oz frozen banana, and a scoop of ORAC Engergy protein greens. First the first four ingredients, then blend on slow until it all grabs; last the scoop of ORAC. Liquifying the other first allows the flaky powder to absorb. It's not deafening, so I don't mind that it takes longer. Very Happy
