I love the idea and the picture but I really dislike the idea of "sneaking" anything. Because she's not "sneaking" them in (doing something surreptitiously) but rather she's consciously making them available. That's not sneaking. It's making them more convenient and easy to access. It's "simplifying" rather than sneaking. That's a conscious process. "sneaking in" vegetables makes it seem like veggies are "not fun" or "icky" so you have to just get them in where no one will notice (like "sneaking" veggies into fruit juices for kids - duh, if the kids can see the label they can see the veggies alongside the fruit; not to mention that they likely saw the same commercial mom and dad did!) --Deb R

Now, I see it completely differently. To me sneak means clever delight! So, there you have it with differences of prior experience! I also love the way Samantha's kids are chowing down on the veggies - when you have it there and ready, kids will go for it more than parents might think! Lani

Really enjoyed this, Lani. Great post. Although I was half expecting some tips on how to sneak healthy food into the cinema. It's so difficult isn't it. Perhaps you can cover that topic one day. Interesting points from Bugsmom too, I thought. I guess in an ideal world it's the unhealthy foods that would have to be "sneaked". And all animal products would be served in the shape of vegetables, and be called "meatie-carrot, or meatie-kale etc. And we'd be laughing and pointing at the people eating them, and saying things like "why don't these people just eat the real thing", or something. I think that's right isn't it.

I guess it's the connotation some have of 'sneak' being a way of getting away with something your aren't supposed to do? As noted, that is not the perspective I had in writing the piece. Though it does take strategizing! We should start a thread about theater stash Lani Facebook

We've stashed all sorts of home made goodies (and also lots of candy) in big jacket pockets. Summer is no good for that - fewer places to hide things. But, the best thing is the drive-in - we can bring in anything we want (except a grill, for safety reasons) openly and freely. We used to bring a box of Kentucky Fried with all the fixin's. Now we'll bring bottled water, homemade granola bars, fruit, etc. --Deb R

Lani I'm not sure I understand the humor there Lani. Maybe a reference I'm missing. But yeah, the KFC was about two miles down the road from the drive-in (yes, there's still an active drive in 15 minutes from our house, 3 screens, double feature on each one every night all summer). We'd hit the KFC, then go sit in the line to get into the drive in. Depending on how early we got there, we might eat while we waited. Otherwise, we'd get situated in our spot then eat. And sometimes both - we'd nibble a bit as we waited then nibble some more once we were in our spot. One summer, we were there so often, the parking attendants at the drive in (the guys who make sure the big SUVs don't park in front of the Mini Coopers) knew our vehicle on sight and would come over and say Hi. --Deb R

Oh! I mean that you painted a great visual with eating KFC at the drive-in, it was a juxtaposition I hadn't thought of before. Did I miss something or say something wrong? Please let me know so! Lani

I have never heard of eating kfc at the movies either - sounds humorous to me!

It's not like we're hiding the fried chicken and fixin's in our pockets. It's sitting front and center in the car. We drive into the theater area (giant outdoor screens with large dirt/gravel parking area) and sit in our own vehicle (or on our own lawn chairs) while watching the movie outdoors and listening via the FM radio in the vehicle. We've also brought pizza on occasion, we've brought in popcorn, candy, water bottles. For a time when our son was younger, we even had pool noodle/pvc "boppers" that we'd bring and he'd find some random kids and they'd have 'sword fights' and 'light saber' battles until it got dark enough for the movies to start. They do have a snack bar/concession and we've gone there for things like ice cream that might otherwise tend to be a bit messy for us to transport. --Deb R
