Has anyone bought Dr. Barnard's new book?

I ordered it from Amazon and it should arrive by Friday.

Are you talking about the one that came out just today? "The 21 Day Weighloss Kickstart" I've been thinking about ordering eat. It just seems I already have SO many books. Wonder how different it might be.

that's why I like to get books from the library first, to see if they're actually worth owning

Yeah, I just bought this from the PCRM website. I've got the entire Dr Barnard collection. It's hard to pick a favourite. Maybe "Food for Life". Theodore

Wonder how different it might be. Apparently, not different at all. From a Publishers Weekly review: Following the success of his 2010 21-Day Vegan Kickstart online program, physician Barnard (Breaking the Food Seduction; Foods That Fight Pain, etc.) reworks his material for this guided comprehensive lifestyle change to be featured as a program on PBS stations. Day by day, Barnard discusses vegan choices, benefits and challenges. Readers will learn to substitute vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and plant-based protein for fatty animal products (meat, dairy, fish) and sugary fare... Notice that "reworks his material"? There is only one customer review on Amazon.com, which gives the book only 3 stars (out of five possible). It says, in part: I tend to get angry at "diet books" that try to make it all sound so easy. This book is no exception. Phrases such as "You can still have delicious desserts!" and "No deprivation! Just simple food swaps you will hardly notice!" throw up red flags for me. Truth be told, the "desserts" they promote are fresh fruit and the food swaps mean switching out all meat, dairy and even plant based oils for beans, vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. That is a TALL order for most people, especially the type of people that are desperate to lose weight. If it were easy to do so, I think most of us would have already done it. I am a bookoholic, but I'm not buying this one.

I had the opportunity to look at it while at Books-A-Million yesterday and while I was tempted, it does seem like a lot of information I already have in my hundreds of other books! Of course that doesn't mean I won't buy it eventually, I'm a book addict!

This was about my 20th book on diabetes and one of very few that struck a chord of authenticity to me. I still admire it (and its author), but I have one reservation. The subtitle is "The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes Without Drugs." I wish that it was "...Without Drugs and Without Weight Loss for the Thin Diabetic." The vegan diet brings down my type 2 diabetes (mostly pre-diabetes) to normal levels as long as I am in a calorie deficit and losing more weight. At 5 feet 2 inches tall and currently 94 lbs., that's gotten ridiculous and even dangerous. My healthiest weight, which I maintained for the past 5 years, was about 104 lbs.

Checochinian I didn't see your reply before I posted my message directly above this one. The above message is not a reply to your message about diabetes. With regard to your post about diabetes, this is something Susan may be able to help you with. Or maybe Caroline Trapp. It sounds like your case is an anomaly because Dr Barnard has conducted some very meticulous peer-reviewed studies / trials on diabetes and would have noted this problem if it came up with any frequency. Remember you're in good company here, with access to a lot of excellent free advice and expertise, when most MD's won't even say Hi to you unless they're getting a kickback for it. Good luck on your quest. Sincerely Theodore P.S. - Don't pay any attention to any review on Amazon. Most of those reviews are just people's ex-partners trying to get even. Or the competition trying to ruin the buzz.

I haven't bought the book yet but I plan to. The January 21-day kickstart was my first and I don't mind if some of the information is repeated, as I can use it as a reference and additional motivation at a later stage after the kickstart is done. I am a book lover and like to have something in my hands as well as having the web site. The only other book I have of Dr Barnard's is his Food for Life. As a side note after the kickstart I wanted a new vegan recipe book and couldn't decide which one. So I ended up with 3 - 'Veganomicon' (that several people have mentioned), 'Appetite for Reduction' by the same author and The Happy Herbivoure'. I am having fun trying out new things.

I used to be able to gain weight by just thinking about pizza. People say that getting old is not for wimps, and they speak the truth. For people who like Dr. Barnard's work, I also recommend that by John A. McDougall, M.D. I have a book and two DVDs. The book is "The McDougall Program" published in 1990. The DVDs are Dr. McDougall's Total Health Solution for the 21st Century, published in 2003 McDougall Made Easy - 14 Practical Lessons, 14 Great Cooking Demonstrations, published in 2007. All of the above are great, but my absolute favorite is the 2nd DVD. It sounds as if it might be superficial - a once-over-lightly treatment. Not at all! What he has to say in that work is detailed and convincing. Even better, the cooking demonstrations by his wife Mary are fantastic.
