Reading Spice labels
Posted Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at 10:24 PM

One of my favourite spice mixtures is lemon pepper - love it on roasted veggies and sauted mushrooms and onions.

I just read the label though and am shocked to learn that SALT is the first ingredient, SUGAR is the third ingredient and lemon is actually 11th in the list!! What the heck?!?! AND, it even contains hydrogenated soy and cottonseed oil. All I have to say is #@$%!!!!! I feel robbed!! Shocked

All we are saying is "Give Peas a Chance"

It is shocking when you first start learning to read ALL labels. It's amazing the "stuff" that is put in our food. Blended spices can hide all kinds of things. There's a "salad seasoning" blend I use to like, it was scary when I read the ingredients. It's best to keep it simple with the spices and make your own blends. Spices is one area where I do spend the extra to buy organic whenever reasonably possible. Try your health food store for a similar blend and see if you don't find a better option. Or do a google search and see if you can find a recipe for lemon pepper.

In the powdered juice isle there is a powder called "True Lemon" it is great in H2O and sprinkled over veggies etc with fresh ground pepper. This is how I make my own Lemon Pepper.

Jeannie - That sounds incredible. Thanks for sharing. I'll bet it would be good in a lot of things. I'm going to look for it next trip to the store. I love how we learn so much from each other!
