We only have a few days left

Crying or Very sad
I can say that this is the best program I have been on. You got me back to vegan and I am feeling so much better. That dairy was making me sick and I had no idea.
I want to make sure that I stay with this and want to sign up again when it is offered. How can I do that?
And can we still post here and for how long?
I love the people I have met here and feel like we have connected. I got so much from you all that I just want to say Thank You you all are amazing.
Here's to our lives of good health!
Love and Peace!

You can post here for as long as you like. You can register for the next Kickstart probably anytime after this site is down. But we always keep our Kickstart alum in the loop on such things, so don't worry.

Congratulations on your success! Nothing better than feeling in control of your body, your life, and your health.

I'm confused. What do you mean we only have a few days left? Left of what?

I saw the Dr. on a PBS show and found this site. The next day I started the program. I am on a fixed income so can barely afford the food. Trust me, healthy is a lot more expensive than junk.

Anyhow, is this site going to be gone? kc Crying or Very sad

Meaning - there are only 21 days of messages and tips on the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart. You can always go to the various sites and read information.

And don't let Whole Foods fool you. Eating healthy used to be the poor man's diet! Beans and grains are pennies per meal and invaluable in terms of health.

Yes, you are write. I am choosing beans and oatmeal for food. But its the fresh produce that is expensive. But I think its just the restocking my kitchen with new things thats costly. I'm sure that once done, it will work out. kc

Almost every town or near by town has a farmer's market.
Somewhere here there was a link for organic veggies that someone posted. And you can do a search. I went to ours this last weekend and I SHOCKED at how low the prices were. And the veggies looked wonderful. Kale is one of my favs and it was $1.50 a large bunch and in the local market it is sometime $2.50 +. Unless there's a special. And this is So CA. Prices are high all over but my mom use to shop only what was on special and we ate like kings and queens.
If you can't plant a garden then maybe there is a coop garden somewhere close. I found out that the local Sr. Centers have lots of info that they have for the Sr. But I called them and asked a question about the farmer's market and they were happy to look it up and give me the info. And I am not a Sr.
Remember you health is #1
Good luck.

And just think how the veggies and fruits are so much less expensive than doctors and prescriptions! I know it seems like a lot to stock up on at first, but you don't have to buy everything to get started (like vegan sausages, vegan cheese, etc). It seems like those are the more expensive items, but the dried beans, grains, and whatever veggies are on sale are much less expensive than meat and convenience foods. And it does help if you can compare prices. I bought some items at Whole Foods and then found them for less than half the price at Sprouts! I'm not knocking WF ... they have a lot of good things and things you can't find anywhere else. But if budget is a concern, WF is probably not your best bet and you would be better off with the farmers markets and other things that others have already recommended.

yes, farmer's markets are really good deals! and sometimes they get even better toward the end of the market day...because the vendors don't wanna pack up and rehaul things. can't count on last-minute discounts, but i've caught them several times. once i got three heads of FREE lettuce when i bought some tomatoes from the same guy who was in the process of shutting down his stand for the weekend.

here's the site to search for your own local options. i am also a member of an organic CSA--basically i subscribe to a local farm. it's an AWESOME deal. $14 a week (paid in advance, but they have installment plans) gets us all the veggies we can eat from May-Nov.

http://www.localharvest.org

prices will start coming down on fresh things too now that spring is here...i've been using lots of frozen, canned tomatoes, etc. to save $ in the winter. keep your eyes peeled for that asparagus--it'll be first! YUM.

Essie, that's good to know. I was thinking about signing up for one of these, but was not sure if you would really get a good variety and enough to justify the cost. I mean, I know it's all local and fresh and all those wonderful things, but wondered how the price would compare to the grocery store. Do you have an idea about whether the cost/pound or per item is about the same, or more or less than the regular grocery store?

I have found it quite easy to give up the "other" lifestyle much to my husband's demise. Just have to reeducate him in grocery shopping. We are up in Canada and I can hardly wait for gardening season so I can grow my own food.

Oh my goodness, it's much much cheaper than getting the same things at the grocery store.

It depends on the week...and obviously not all CSAs will be the same. But in my area 1 lb clamshells of organic salad greens are $5.99. For the $14 a week my CSA averages out to I am getting a selection that typically looks something like this:

2 heads of broccoli
2-3 heads of various lettuces
1 pint of strawberries, or mixed raspberries/blackberries
2 bell peppers
a few hot peppers
1 eggplant
1/4-1/2 lb loose spinach or arugula
1 bunch collards, kale, or 1/2 lb swiss chard
1 lb potatoes or tomatoes
1 garlic bulb
2-3 onions
as many herb varieties as I want to pick myself from the field across the street
etc.

Other things like carrots, sweet potatoes, watermelons, pumpkins, cauliflower, etc. rotate in to replace some of these things as the season progresses.

And in August when the tomatoes are crazy I can sometimes get 10 lbs or more of various sizes/types, including the heirlooms!

At the end of the season (week before Thanksgiving, usually) they open the fields for pick-your-own sessions, half of which you donate to the local food bank for Thanksgiving meals for families in need. I still have a few heads of broccoli in my freezer.

I could spend $14 at the grocery for 3 clamshells of organic greens, which is way way less food than I get. Even the relatively skimpy weeks (rare, maybe 2 a year) when it's just root crops and a head of lettuce + herbs are still a really good deal.

Most of the CSAs publish lists of what their usual crops are, and can tell you how much to expect for your money.

I am a huge fan of this system! Obviously! I love seeing exactly where my food comes from, and even picking some of it myself. I happen to live near my farm (4 miles) but in cities or larger rural communities they deliver boxes for weekly pickup, without the pick-your-own requirement.

Have fun. Smile

Thanks for all that info Essie! That does sound super. I guess it takes a little adjustment to deal with the new things you might receive in your weekly box and have to figure out how to use them instead of just buying the items you want for particular recipes. But I think that could be kind of fun too and get me to try things that I might not otherwise buy at the grocery store.

If that is a typical week, it looks like it could pretty much feed 2 people with just the addition of grains & beans and maybe some more fruit. Awesome! I'll definitely check it out again.

Although I have not done the CSA box my daughter does and their whole family looks forward to it each week and seeing what new surprises are in it. They then look up recipes for the foods they haven't tried before and give the new foods a whirl. They have two girls 9 and 13 and the girls love this adventure. They were able to get the box year round so met some new winter veggies they had not been introduced to before.

Really sounds like fun.

I am so sad. I just found this site today and the
21-Day kick start is almost over.

Does anyone know when it will be offered again?

I guess I can go ahead and do this myself. However I have a problem. We have Safeway and Wal-Mart--that's it--in our town. And the health food store does not offer vegan items. Well, some packaged things(cereals, cookies, etc.) but none of the alternative things.

Sooo? Any ideas?

I am so glad I found this site. All started from Dr. Barnard's program on PBS

Thanks in advance!

Rose,

Actually, you can do quite well with Safeway!

I loaded up there just 2 days ago with: organic apples, sugar snap peas, sweet onions, bananas, kale (3 bunches!), bok choy...OK, the list of veggies goes on and on. Oh, and yummy sliced mushrooms in bags! Potatoes....

You can also get wholegrain pasta, brown rice, and if you like veg-meats they have a lot of those as well.

So glad you came in before it was "over" - we'll run again before long!
