Thyroid meds

I had to start medication about 6 months ago for low thyroid, probably due to severe drop in estrogen as I competed menopause.

My Dr. selected a natural product called Armour Thyro, made from ground pig thyroids. I need both T3 and T4 in my dosage.

I know it is not vegan - but my concern is if there can still be antibiotics in the product. It is heated in preparation to eliminate viruses, like swine flu.

Does the thyroid store antibiotics like the liver can?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I need T3 and T4 also, and take both Synthroid and Cytomel. I've had good luck with them. I know some docs swear by Armour, but so far, I've done well with the synthetics. Something to consider, anyway. I wish I could be of more assistance. You might try calling your pharmacist – they often know these type of things.

Interestingly, at the "heart smart" talk I went to the other night the speaker said that low thyroid function is in direct correlation to high LDL. Do either of you have high LDL? I do...didn't think I had low thyroid though. My last TSH # was 2.4...

Can anyone verify if low thyroid has anything to do with high LDL?

No, I have very low LDL (my doc wishes all her patients were like me, haha), and I have never heard that there is any correlation. I've read several books on thyroid function, and keep up with Mary Shomon and Dr. Ridha Arem's various writings, and neither one has mentioned it.

Yes, I have high LDL (bad) cholesterol, but super-high HDL (good). This is a heredity condition in my family and I do not think related to the low thyroid function. This is a new condition for me since menopause. I am told it is common in women when our estrogen drops significantly.

FYI - my first test 6 months ago was 3.9 and my Dr. refused to treat me. He said it was within the acceptable range (probably set by the insurance company). A friend convinced me to see her Dr. who practices alternative medicine when appropriate. When he found out I sleep in a heated waterbed, with flannel sheets, and wear ski socks and long underwear to bed he decided to try me on the Armour Thyro. At only 30 mg a day, my test is now about 2.0, which he considers reasonable for me. I am SO much more comfortable - and WARM!

Remember, the test is backward. A number at the High end of the range, means Low thyroid output. He likes to see his mid-age, female patients about 1.9
