Opinion on group exercise?
Posted Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 10:27 AM
So here are my thoughts and questions.. I had the opportunity to take Zumba for the first time this week. It is in a renovated shirt factory building. Beautiful woodwork! The Zumba class is in the basement. There are a couple of tiny windows and the door. It is still cold up here so the doors and windows are closed. They did turn on the heat and put a fan in the corner. Now you put 16-20 women in a room, breathing heavy.. What if one of them are sick? Or just coming down with something? Is the potential for getting sick worth the work out? Also note here, it's not like i would not work out if i did not attend. If it were the only exercise i got, well i would do it. If i don't do zumba i find other ways. I had even thought of inviting my 2 sisters who go with me to my house to dance w/the wii. And i do use the treadmill regularly & bike when it's warm. I don't lack for exercise.

I do zumba often, not as often as I used to though . I have never given a thought to getting sick. The room gets crowded sometimes depending on the teacher. I rarely get sick, when I do, I attribute it to wiping my sick kid's nose all day for several days!!

I used to go to group classes and loved some of them ... but I cringe when some of the instructors get too "fancy" and add things that are too difficult for some of the participants. Once I was taking a step aerobics class that was billed as "beginner," but because it was at a convenient time, a lot of more advanced people showed up for it ... so the instructor couldn't resist throwing in a lot of difficult moves, making the true beginners in the back of the room quit in frustration. I felt so bad for them, because I know they were thinking, "Here's something fun I can do for fitness," only to feel humiliated with all of the gyrations of the skinnies in the room. Or once I was new at an established class and was told by a woman to "Move," because I was in her "spot!" The instructor heard and made a joke out of it, but I was turned off and never returned to that class again. I wonder how many people don't go, not because they are lazy, but because of nonsense like this that probably goes on in gyms all over the country day after day?

I've never heard of "Zumba" and found out there's a class at my Y on Tuesday nights. do you think someone like me, with two left feet would get kicked out? back to your orginal question, if you didn't touch you face during class, and washed your hands throughly afterwards, I don't see how you would get sick.

nope i don't think you would get kicked out..the steps are made for people with 2 left feet.. like me.. they are simple to repeat.. also my instructor stressed that no 2 people dance alike..so if you are close that is good and even encouraged.

Cold and flu season is pretty much over. I'd worry a lot less about it at this time of year than I would mid February.

ya know, I have been doing Bikram 2-4x's a week for many-many years now. And I have to tell you, if there were a place that colds, flues and or other types of funk were to be passed amongst the attendees it’s there. But I have yet to experience any problems. We are in a room that is heated between 95-110 and regardless of the dehumidifiers, when you have that may ppl stacked at arm’s length apart ad 5 rows deep it is a sauna. I have never gotten sick my kids have brought more funky stuff home w/them than anything (bless their little hearts). I don’t think I'd worry very much. Most people that are sick aren’t going to go to a group class anyway...at least that’s the LAST place that I want to be when I’m not feeling very well. I wouldnt worry too much about it, just enjoy your class.

Not that we want to get sick, but if your not exposed to germs, your body won't have imunity to fight off illness. I've been going to a class called "Young At Heart". I really love the instructor and I feel like a spring chicken there (and I'm 50 ) This community center also has Zumba and I'm tempted to try it, but I was afraid I'd throw out my lower back if there's a log of hip movement.

Hi Veggies4me, Ask if the instructor is Zumba Gold certified. This is a certification for beginners, seniors or who would like Zumba but have medical concerns. The classes are fun, and the choreography was designed by 2 former dancers (one an ex Rockette) who themselves are over 50. Best wishes!

I have been taking classes at a neighborhood gym for a couple of years now. I spin five days a week, circuit train and take a core class. We always kid that we catch everything there, even though we are pretty careful about handwashing. We always wipe down our equipment after each use with simple green. And there is a sanitizing gel dispenser at every turn. This can't be any worse than going to a public library or the grocery store. I really wouldn't worry about getting sick. All that exposure to others will help to build resistance.
