On Plan at the Movies

Hey Guys

I notice that healthy food and healthy doctors are showing up on the big screen more and more these days (although what a shame they didn't make an appearance in Bridesmaids and let those girls know the error of their ways). So why is it still so difficult to eat healthy when you're watching the big screen.

Anyone have any tips for eating healthy food at the movies ?? Bearing in mind that there isn't a single healthy food on sale there. And they seem to be stricter than the White House security when it comes to people bringing their own food in with them.

I see Lani's managed to smuggle in some air-popped popcorn in the past. Has anyone else had any success in smuggling in their own food. Or have you noticed any healthy items on sale that I'm overlooking.

I hear Drs Campbell, Esselstyn and Barnard were successful in getting some healthy food samples into the screenings of Forks Over Knives, but I have no clue how they did it. My hunch is that Dr E caused some kind of distraction while Dr C and Dr B carried it all in. I'd love to know the details.

Theodore

I put water in my purse and air popped popcorn with nutritional yeast and sometimes I will make a mix with popcorn, nuts and a few vegan, soy-free chocolate chips.

For my daughter I let her have the popcorn with no added butter and bring Amys fruit gummies for something sweet.

Oh, and water, of course. I have a large purse/bag and I smuggle it all in there Smile

Purses - I might've known those things would come in handy.

Theodore - you don't carry a purse? You just don't know what you can get away with in a purse !!

I take my own food to the movies all the time. Water, popcorn, fat free pretzels, raw nuts, whatever! I carry a pretty good sized purse and don't have anything else in it. I've never been stopped or asked. Sometimes if my purse is way overstuffed I will by their over-priced water, but not often! Wait til the lights go out and chomp away.

Or eat before I go and just take a little popcorn and some water.

other ideas:
baggies with cereal, or cut up celery, apple and carrots, or granola bars or whole wheat pretzels and dried fruit.

you could also bring unsweetened iced tea instead of water.

But how would I smuggle the purse to the cinema without other guys seeing me ??

You don't strike me as being the kind of guy that gives a flying FLIP what anybody else thinks. Am I wrong ??

I put on a brave front, WildStars. But I'm all jelly inside. Vegan jelly.

I don't eat or drink at the movies. Drinking just makes me have to get up and pee. And I don't like just mindlessly shoving food into my mouth as I stare zombie-like at the screen. (I mean, I don't mind the staring zombie-like at a screen once in a while, but I don't feel the need to stuff my face while I do it.)

Can you do me a favour, Lisa. Can you try smuggling some food in under a hat, and let me know if you get caught. I think hats are the area with the most potential here.

The AMC theater near us has a "healthy snack pack" that includes popcorn chips, fruit chips, an Odwalla bar and a bottle of water for $7.

Theodore
you know Theodore.. around here there are lots of guys that wear baggy pants.. big pockets.. the pants are always hanging down low.. so low we can see underwear.. i am thinking you could go stylin... you could stock so much in the pockets that it would weigh down the pants naturally... then you would blend in and look like one of those guys.. chipmunk pockets... you could wear the hat just to distract them.

I think I'm just gonna try bribing the folks on the door. That's how I solve most of my problems. I don't see why this situation should be any different.

i could see you try to hide stuff under your hat.. and wondering what would be falling out.. you could go for twizzlers...those long ones that look like hair... those boxes of candy that rattle wouldn't be so goood...
i suppose you could take a sandwich and say you have special dietary needs reccomended by your doctor..

Nah, I still think the purse is the best idea Shocked Reminds me of a cute, true story... a few weeks ago, I was at the mall, and a nice-looking, middle-aged gentleman was sitting on a bench, holding in his lap a beautiful, bright pink Coach purse. As I passed, he stood up, swung it up on his shoulder, and walked into the store, as I was. He walked around with it on his shoulder for a few minutes, seemingly oblivious, and I couldn't help but remark, " Hey, I like your bag!". There was a split second look of surprise on his face, then he turned to me and laughed and said, " You know, my wife had some major surgery, and is not supposed to carry anything, so she gets me to hold this heavy thing for her, while she is shopping." I gave him kind of an " ahh, I see" look, then he went on to say, that he thinks she is past needing him now, but she loves the convenience, and he just forgets he has it. Then he added, " At least, thats my story and I'm stickin' to it". Laughing Laughing

Hi Smile Maybe it's a cultural difference, but haven't you guys thought just not to bring any food to the movie? Wink After all it's like about 2-3 hours, so you're not going to starve Wink I almost never eat anything at movies. I bring my own water in my purse or buy theirs if I forget mine.

Theodore - I would suggest you carry a light jacket over your arm (many people complain that theaters are cold). You could put your snacks in the pocket of the jacket that hangs close to your body. Then, no need to worry about carrying a "man bag". Very Happy Enjoy the show!

Definitely a cultural influence
And doesn't anyone feel guilty at sneaking
It's only two hours

I'm seeing a lot of food for thought here, Ladies. Thank you so much.

Perhaps I'll try all of these suggestions one at a time. Except eating nothing. I find that the emotional turmoil I go through whenever I watch a film makes me very hungry. Especially so if I've excreted tears. I guess I could choose films that aren't so poignant.

The only other suggestion I can think of is to order a takeaway from my local healthfood restaurant and get them to deliver it to the cinema, and let them worry about smuggling it in. They're actually extremely dedicated to their customers, so I'm pretty sure they'd do this.
