Question: Seasoned Rice Vinegar
Posted Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 9:25 AM

I noticed a lot of recipes call for Seasoned Rice Vinegar. However, when reading the ingredient labels of these bottles, all contain "high fructose corn syrup." I thought this ingredient was not healthy, and one to stay away from, no?

Thanks!

There are brands that do not use HFCS. They use a small amount of real sugar. And of course, it will cost a little more.

would it be possible to buy rice vinegar and season it yourself? I know it's possible to make flavored oils and vinegars at home, but never tried with rice vinegar.

I am surprised ... I would not even have thought to read the label on a bottle of vinegar to see if it has HFCS. I have plain rice vinegar; now I have to go home and read what's on that label. I believe the brand I use is Nakano, and I just bought a fresh bottle last night.

I have the Nakano rice vinegar and there are no HFCS in it.

However, I have a different brand of a seasond rice vinegar and it does have HFCS. Never thought to check before!

Thanks for the info! I'm relieved to know there ARE brands without HFCS (I should have known ya'll thought about that before putting it in as an ingredient). I now have a renewed excitement about trying the yummy-recipes with seasoned rice vinegar (just need to do a bit more shopping around in my area to find the good brands -- surely, someone carries one of them). Thanks again!!

Amazing isn't it, how many things you think are "safe" until you read the label! Something that amazed me was wine. How can smashed grapes not be vegan? Well, things like sea shells, egg whites, and isinglass (dried fish swim bladders, mostly sturgeon) are used in the fining process! Yes, there are vegan wines, beers, and other liquor that is vegan. Go to Barnivore.com for info. Since starting this program, have you found how much more aware you are of what you now choose to eat?!

I think that's one of the reasons I lose weight on this plan and get/keep my glucose in good control - I have to stop and think about what I'm eating. Is it vegan? yes/no right off the bat. Which provides a minute of thought to consider is this a good choice for my blood sugar level? for calories/fat? is there an alternative that would do just as well? Am I even really hungry or just wanting a snack?

Trader Joe's sells an inexpensive seasoned rice vinegar made with sugar, brown sugar, & sea salt. I don't see why you couldn't just buy rice vinegar & sweeten it with whatever you wanted.
