Rye Bread
Posted Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 9:44 PM

I am trying to find a brand of Rye bread that doesn't have the first ingredient listed "unbleached flour", but instead rye flour or whole grain rye. I live on the West coast and have had no luck finding anything. Any suggestions? Thanks for any suggestions! (I have diabetes and heard that the best bread for blood sugar would be Rye)

Pumpernickel is also good to try. Have you looked in Whole Foods grocery stores for rye bread?

I found some at Aldi. They don't carry it all the time though, just when they do a German theme. It is very good - high in fiber too. There is a brand that is recommended in Prevent and Reverse Heart disease, you may be able to find that one at a store or through Amazon. The bread that I bought has a long shelf life until opened.

Hi Cathy.. can you look on the label and see if it has high fructose corn syrup?

we have a local bakery.. can get some decent bread at a premium.. my kitchen aid will do most of the mixing.. perhaps i will give it a go at some point.. i am not a big bread fan to begin with.

I have been looking for a decent rye bread recipe for the bread machine ... every one we have tried is too dry and dense. Haven't found a satisfactory one yet.

It does not. The ingredients are: whole kernal rye, wholemeal rye flour, salt, oat fiber, malt extract, yeast. 1 large slice has 6g fiber.

I have made rye bread using about 1/3 rye flour to 2/3 ww flour. I add gluten flour to help it rise so it is not so heavy.

I don't eat much bread either. One of these loaves lasts for months, I just have some as a snack once in awhile, and usually only 1/4 or 1/2 slice.

I also looked up the one recommended by Caldwell Esselstyn. It is Mestemacher. www.germandeli.com/mebr.html. Healthy German food - gotta love that!

The package that I have is dated 1/1/12. It was 1.49 - good price for a natural whole grain bread.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just looked up the Mestemacher (sp?) on the website and I'm going to order some tomorrow. Will also look at the Natural Food store here and see if they might carry it too. Trader Joe's use to carry a sprouted rye bread (their own brand) and it was very good. I haven't seen it there in a long time though.
