I think it was back a while but Ginnifer Goodwin's Recipe for "Gramma' Bok Choy (& chick'n) Salad" lists Gardein Crispy Tenders. What it that and does anyone know where to get it?
Thanks. Very Happy

You can get them at Whole Foods and they are fabulous! They also carry a Gardein brand buffalo wings , and something like a chicken parmesean minus the cheese. They are all vegan and in the frozen foods section. My 6 year olds never eat meat anymore because of the grossness factor, and they always have to double check that they are not eating a real chicken.
There is also a beef substitute that seemed a little too beef like to me that I'm not sure i can say i liked it. Anyone new to giving up meat would most likely enjoy it very much! Very real tasting!

I don't know if you have these stores where you live but Lowes Foods has them, as does Harris Teeter, too. Both of these grocery store chains might just be NC/SC companies, though - not sure. Confused

I haven't had them in awhile but I remember them as being good!

Thank you you guys. I live in So CA and we don't have those stores you talked about but we do have Whole Foods.

I live in NW WA and my Safeway just introduced several of the Gardein products in the refrigerated (not frozen) section at a "low introductory price". I've read that they are very good, but the price ($3.99) seems to outweigh the product offering weight and # of servings listed on the back. I can do better with Field Roast and Morning Star faux meat offerings. Just my opinion. Hey, take my tofu and add spices/various veggie ingredients for a lot of great taste and better portions - and a lot less money!

Hey Meowers - I think you live in Seattle, right? Drive three hours up the highway and across the border and you'll find those same products for $6 a pkg. Might have to make a trip to your neck of the words for some shopping. Smile

My neck of the woods might be closer than you think! I live in Sequim, on the Olympic Peninsula. Where do you live? If you have Google Earth, check us out!

Hello, Mariberry, in Vancouver, BC! Well, since my $3.99 is $4, and looking how far away you are from me, I'd say your $6 is still a good deal unless you were buying A LOT and putting it in many coolers with dry ice for the trip home! AND I can't say all Safeway's are doing what mine is. I just think that the portion size/total pkg. weight/nutrition values are not worth the price. I'm also saying this because I just looked up the currency exchange, and seems the USD and CAD are virtually equal so don't see any savings when you add in the travel factor. There is a private co., Black Ball (cohoferry.com), that runs both a car ferry and passenger only ferry service from Victoria to Port Angeles, WA but I'd check out the Blaine Safeway location since I think travel cost would be less. Unless you had a reason, like a vacation or visiting friends in my area for a few days, the trip's cost would certainly be prohibitive! Also, the Gardein products were just introduced in my Safeway, and I don't know how long the $3.99 will last. They will retail for $4.99 when the promo is over. Now if the currency exchange rate should really start to favor you, I'd say stick with Canada. Here's a link that might be of some help to you. Don't know that this Safeway is lower than the $6 you stated, but suppose you could give them a call to see if they carried it, and at what price, not to mention add in whatever travel time, gas, etc., it would cost you. Personally, I wouldn't buy this product due to the cost. Now if Costco would carry some large packaging with a significant cost savings...

Also, check out the site (gardein.com) and decide if these products are really what you want. They have their own seasonings, etc., already in the bag. I'd rather use Morning Star's Chik'n Strips (vegan) and add my own spices, etc. and create a meal around them - less expensive! Didn't think to check, but maybe (if available) you could buy them from the site in bulk, and the s/h plus shipping cost would save some $$ ? I'd say buy a pkg. of a certain item and be sure you like the offering before going further. I'll stick with my Field Roast!

http://www.fieldroast.com/

Only their sausages are available in my Safeway. Four sausages regularly for $6.99 is not acceptable to me, but they go on sale for $4.99 and then I grab a few pkgs. I've only tried the Mexican Chipotle (LOVE spicy and these are wonderful!), but will try the apple/sage and other varieties when on sale. One participant said the apple/sage sausages were very good!

Can some other participants give their opinions to the Gardein offerings? Would be helpful to all!

I think the Gardein products are pretty great, if a little high in price. My husband eats vegan at home but a little meat when we go out. He really likes the gardein recipes I make for him. There is a chicken scallopini in the Tal Ronnen Conscious Cook book (all vegan) that I am going to make at some point. It has more steps than I usually have time for. I live is a really small town, but our one health food store started carrying it after me and the one other vegan starting bugging them.

I'm definitely in the minority as far as disliking them. I had a coupon for $1 off awhile back and Safeway had their products on sale, so I purchased the chicken that was "southwest" style--can't remember the exact name. I was so excited to try it and it looked yummy but it tasted gross. The texture was very off-putting to me---way too soft. I did not find the taste or texture similar to chicken at all. I was pretty bummed because I really wanted to like it!
I'm not a big fan of garden burgers either though. About the only faux meats I've found palatable are morning star corn dogs and chicken patties. It's for the best though due to expense and the high level of processing these foods go through. I have not checked to see if the corn dogs or chicken patties are vegan--I only eat them a couple of times a year and last summer was the last time I bought them.

I think I might have picked up the same offering as Summerperk at my local Kroger store when they first started offering Gardein. I got some sort of Southwestern Stuffed fake-chick thing. It was ok, but I thought the texture was too chickeny for me. Then again, I haven't had chicken in 20 years so my comparisons may be way off.

I liked to eat the qorn or morningstar chik patties w/ gravy and pretend like they're chicken fried steak, but it turns out they're not vegan. Sad
