Books to inspire the skeptical
Posted Friday, January 29, 2010 at 12:36 PM
I'm looking for books or websites that I can share with my 60+ mom about the benefits of a plant-based diet that are, shall I say, gentle in their approach and message. I think she's curious and I want ecourage her but she lives across the country so the day-to-day is more challenging. I can't just stop over with a batch of vegan cookies or a fabulous shepard's pie. Any suggestions? She started doing tai chi so anything seems possible...

I'm a 60+ year old women. I did the change to Vegan because I wanted to set an example for my husband. (he is sooo stubborn) But actually I didn't want to take all the medication my sister & husband take. Tell her how much better you feel, you get to eat alot of good food and you lose a few pounds. Then direct her to the Nutritionmd.org site. Tell her about the 21-day kickstart coming up in March and all the support she got get. It is fun trying all the new grains and beans, etc. You can teach an old dog new trick.

Though not 100% vegan, my first step, and I think a very good first step is a book called "Eat To Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. He promotes high nutrient density eating. If she's open to some technical reading about studies and percentages, the book that ran me from vegetarian to vegan is "The China Study." If she's not put off by irreverance and some foul language, "Skinny Bitch" has turned several people I know straight from omnivore to vegan, with no stop at vegetarian!! "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins is good. It's what convinced me to go vegetarian. John Robbins also wrote one, sorry I don't remember the exact name, it's something about how to live to 100. Or maybe Healthy at 100, something like that. I'm 58, and if she's like me she's more interested in learning how to stay healthy than really losing weight. Losing the weight is just the bonus. Get her to join the kickstart in March, even if all she does is read the posts, watch some of the videos and try some of the recipes. Hope that helps.

Hi Shanna - Re: your farm-raised mum....I wonder if she'd find any value reading Howard Lyman's "Mad Cowboy". I'm sure you know it - he's the 4th generation cattle rancher who is now vegan as well after enduring some serious health issues and researching how he got to the place he found himself. I was lucky enough to hear him speak at an Earthsave conference a year ago and he's a wonderful speaker...you can also get some of his keynote speeches on a DVD. He's an older gent so may appeal to the older generation (I think he's in his 70s now - and healthy as can be).

Dr. John McDougall M.D. has several books, DVD's and loads of great information and testimonies on his website. I have some of his DVD's and cookbooks. He has a lot of good and simple ideas. He has 10-day, 5-day programs and advanced study weekends at his retreat in Northern CA wine country. He also has a trip he and his wife go along on every year to Costa Rica (one of the things on my "wish list".......one day) You can read about it and see pics on his website. www.drmcdougall.com He has a free monthly online newsletter that I get each month. They have a lot of good information, latest medical research and recipes. The new one came out today.

I just got one of the MacDougall books yesterday. It's an older one, mostly recipes--The New MacDougall Cookbook (if "new" can mean 1997). But it also has a summary of the plan in the front. It's really the first time I've looked at his plans in depth, other than occasional visits to the site and the recipes that are also here at Nutrition MD. I think they've evolved a little since this one was printed, especially with regards to sugar/sweeteners. But the recipes look good and there's lots of neat ideas I want to try--Broccomole? Millet Butter? Never would have thought of those.
