Coconut milk, non-dairy creamer
Posted Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 9:08 AM
Two questions: 1. What do the PCRM folks think about the saturated fat in coconut milk? Is it healthy, harmful, or somewhere in-between? You can read both sets of opinions on the Internet, so I am confused. 2. I read that non-dairy creamer contains partially-hydrogenated coconut oil. Could that be good for you? It's hard to believe it could.

I don't know what the nutrition experts will say about the coconut milk, but I think without eating meat, cheese, and all those other fats, a bit of this won't be too bad. The real reason I am responding is that most non-dairy creamers contain milk products (I know, go figure). I understand there are vegan non-dairy creamers, but I have not been able to find them in either the grocery store or the natural foods store I use. I think they are available online. At first, I didn't like Silk soy creamer, but now I really prefer it to anything else. I particularly like the french vanilla, but it does add some sweetness to coffee. It has no saturated fat and no cholesterol. I also use it in vegan French toast, and the unsweetened type in other dishes calling for cream. (sorry for the long answer that doesn't really address your question!)

That's really bad news, because I don't like soy creamer, either....

Just a thought. For those who really need to watch dietary fats - those really looking for weight loss or reversal of heart disease - these fats need to be closely watched, according to Docs McDougall and Esselstyn. Dr. Barnard also writes profusely about changing body composition by eliminating fats. And though there is a coconut milk creamer that says "0" grams fat, the calorie count doesn't match up with the carbs and protein listed, which means there IS fat in there, but it doesn't need to be reported if a serving size rounds down. So if 1 Tablespoon has less than 0.5 grams of fat, the company can round it down to zero. You see where we can get into trouble with servings, too! Who has just a Tablespoon of this or that? And yes, the non-dairy creamer is bad news, with the saturated AND the hydrogenated. Soy can be the way to go, if you likey! It's too beany for me, or too sweet if flavored, so I just go with great, fresh roasted, fresh ground beans and enjoy the cafe. Lani

Thanks, Lani. I haven't gotten to the point of liking coffee without some kind of whitener, so I'll have to give this some thought. I probably put about 1.5 TBSP in my coffee, and I have coffee twice a day. I really enjoy it, even though I know that it adds nothing very helpful to my diet. I don't drink sodas or tea much at all anymore.

Speaking of fats and heart disease - I went to a talk last Wednesday on women's health and heart disease and believe it or not the speaker said there are good saturated fats - butter being one of them! I nearly fell off the chair. (she was encouraging people to stop eating margarine and to eat butter instead). She also promoted organic coconut oil. Now, she didn't say to eat lots of it, but did say butter or coconut oil was a better choice.

Have you tried using almond milk for your coffee? I started doing that a few months ago and at first it took a little getting used to since almond milk is thinner than creamers, but now I love it. I prefer unsweetened almond milk, but they also have vanilla and plain as well. Calories wise, 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk only has about 40 calories.

That's an idea that might be helpful to me...I'm willing to try it.

They have lots of "interesting" ideas about dairy fat and coconut oil being good for you. None of them are scientifically documented. I do like coconut, and will eat shredded or fresh coconut on occasion, and occasionally use lite coconut milk in a recipe. But there's nothing "better" about the saturated fat in it just because it's not of animal origin, according to Fuhrman, Barnard, et al. Them, I trust!

I do think that butter is better than margarine for those that won't give up dairy. Things that stay in the same form for years and years are creepy. I will try the almond milk in my coffee. I read in a post here that Silk is owned by a dairy corp, so I would like to find a different creamer.

Heh. Kinda. They tend to google themselves. No need to call in the distraction squad while we're all trying to get healthy over here.
