Vitamin B12

So it sounds like I need to find a Vitamin B12 supplement for the vegan program. Does anyone know how much to take and how often? Are there any specific brand names I should know? I really have not purchased any items that are fortified. Thanks for any insight!

Hi Doublereed,

This question came up once before but it took me a little while to find it(page 6 of the forum under the title "I am feeling better") so I have taken the liberty of copy/pasting Susan's response for you here.

To quote Susan ----

We have a factsheet on B12 that is useful. You can find it here: http://www.pcrm.org/health/PDFs/faq_b12.pdf

It's true, we need very little, 2.4 micrograms per day. A supplement or fortified food will take care of that and then some.

From what i have read, it seems when you get older, it is harder for your body to absorb what you do take in.

Personally i just pop a b-complex with my multi every day... but i have been doing that well before vegan..

Doublereed, in addition to the other responses, here's a new very short video out from Dr. McDougall about b12 you might find helpful:

Dr. McDougall Medical Message: b12

He mentions whys, whats and how much!

According to my Doctor everyone over the age of 50 should have their B12 checked, vegan or not. Apparently some people, as they get older, have a more difficult time absorbing B12. It's a simple test that can be done at your annual physical. It's also a good idea to have your Vit D checked too. My D was borderline low and my B12 was extremely low even though I was taking supplements. Knowledge is power, better to have it checked, then you KNOW what you need to do.
