really struggling, day 6

I started late, this past Saturday, Jan 8th, so I'm only on day 6. I feel discouraged. My stomach most of the time doesn't feel good; I'm hungry so much of the time; feel like I'm eating far too much bean product. Still with it, though!

Yesterday, someone told me, I'm a type-O, no way vegan works for Type O. Well, I'M type O, so I wondered what your responses would be to that.

I haven't kept a food log, but I'm going to start today. This morning, 1cup Cheerios, 1/2 c. soy milk, one banana. snack, mid-morning, app. 2 cups lightly salted organic blue corn chips. And, 2 cups of coffee this morning, heading towards water now.

This is all actually fine today (except I'm still hungry!). I think if I start to keep a food log, I can probably figure out where the imbalance is.

Recipes are great (but some of them so large!), and I' really happy to be eating lighter on the earth.

In response to your question regarding the blood type diet theory, we think the book Eat Right for Your Blood Type is providing less than useful information. Scientific research has not established that a person’s blood type determines what he/she should eat.

On the good side, it does indicate that vegetarian diets are appropriate for people with type A blood. Unfortunately, it suggests that people with type O blood will not do well on a vegetarian diet, yet most people in this country have type O blood, as did most people in research trials showing that vegetarian diets cause reversal of heart disease as well as marked weight loss. In other words, vegetarian diets are, in fact, healthful for everyone.

Takes a while if you're not used to beans and greens in your diet but it will settle down. Maybe shift the proportions to a little more on the grains instead of beans for a couple days to try and balance things out. Quinoa is a good one - very filling/satisfying whole grain without as much of the 'bean' result. Many grocery stores are starting to carry boxes of quinoa along with their rice and such. Another tasty filling grain is millet - if you can find it for human consumption (it's the little yellow beads in bird seeds mixes). Cooks like rice or oatmeal and really sticks with you!
If you're really hungry, go ahead and something else - grab an extra piece of fruit or some carrot sticks or something.

Hi & Welcome Ruth... Guess what.. you don't have to measure! yippee.. fill that bowl up with cheerios!! fill up the bowl with unsweetened soy milk and toss caution the wind.. have a banana on it...

Forget those recipes are large..make the soup, freeze some, eat the rest.. have a big ole salad with it.. and low fat whole wheat wrap.. if you are hungry after that.. throw caution to the wind again and have an orange!!

dinner.. have some more soup a bean dish with veggies..

absolutely no need to be hungry or to measure! just eat when you are hungry.. digestive system will calm down...

I have to chime in with Cynthia! Throw away that measuring cup at breakfast! I would be hungry if I ate that as well. I am a 20 1/2-year-vegetarian and probably about 60-70% of those years vegan.

Here is my rule of thumb.... if it is whole grain or fruit or vegetable (if you need it, with a no fat vegan sauce). Eat till full. Make each bite or sip of anything count. Make it the best choice you have available for your body.

Be extra kind to yourself during this transition! It will pay off, you will feel better, the animals will live longer, the earth will sigh with relief. Hug yourself!

Best wishes!

Always offer kindness and a soft word to the beings around you; You do not know their journey. Your words can be the hug they need or the shove that breaks them.

Also, make sure to drink plenty of water with the increased fiber intake, and perhaps take a probiotic as you get started with this. Things should get moving and that discomfort should go away.

I'm type O+ a vegetarian for nearly 25 years, I've never really done anything to make sure I got extra protein either, but have always had energy. Since starting the kickstart I have only noticed a positive effect in that my moods have been better.

I agree with the others in that you probably need to eat more, and maybe different selections to feel fuller? I am always starving if I have cold cereal for breakfast, but a breakfast burrito or oatmeal does the trick. It's like if it's not warm my body rejects it lol (I'm sure that's not really why. but it feels like it).

I'm an O+ been vegetarian for 17 years. Now that I'm vegan I'm feeling better than I have in a couple years. Weight it coming off... sugars are darn near normalizing.

It was hard for me to trust myself with food and portions. Eatting when I want whenever I want got be fat to begin with I'd say but the quality of the food has really made the difference here. Today I didn't bring enough food to work with me and I'm starting to feel hungry... usually I have quite the smorgesborg in my fridge here and eat at various times and still losing and feeling good (but I'm very mindful of my fat intake).

Try eating more and see what happens in a couple days.

I definitely agree on eating oatmeal instead of cheerios for breakfast. It will satisfy you and its not gassy. Also on days when I feel like I've had too many beans I reach for a Boca veggie burger. Hang in there - this is really a fantastic way to eat.

I agree with others who have indicated that rolled oats/oatmeal is a great way to start the morning. But if you like cheerios, try having them (with soymilk, ricemilk or whatever plant-based milk you use)on top of a small portion of oatmeal.

If you are watching your sugar intake, try adding half a packet of truvia and a little ground cinnamon to the hot oatmeal.

Wishing you all the best,

Hang in there, you will get beyond the uncomfortable stomache aches. We did the last kickstart, switching from basically an Atkins style food plan, to Vegan, and also dealt with being uncomfortable. For our family it lasted about 2 weeks, but we have stuck with the Vegan meal plans and feel fine now.
