Still eating like a horse...

I am ashamed to say yesterday I broke down and ate some coconut milk ice cream...so much for 21 days without treats. And today I find myself chowing down!! I did the Spicy Thai Soup, and a piece of Spinach Strudel (Supermarket Vegan recipe book) AND huge salad of greens... and then more coconut milk ice cream Embarassed
This was after Raisin Bran cereal, organic english muffin with almond butter, Pasta Bolognese (Moosewood Restaurant) ,greens, 2 prunes and small apple.... OINK! I am not overweight but I read what everyone else is eating I think WHOA!! I really eat ALOT!!

Well, a couple of things come to mind...

1. Don't buy ice cream (even coconut ice cream) so that it is in the house seducing you. Danger.

2. "Treat" yourself to things that are lower in fat. Treats are okay! Just choose healthier ones for these 21 days.

Yesterday was my twins (26) birthday and I had a couple of cake balls, which I had planned to do. Thought that I would stop there but I found myself looking for something else - chips. I put a stop to it in the evening by having a healthy bowl of cereal instead. I heard somewhere that "you crave what you eat". Well, I believe it now, because once I ate something I shouldn't, I wanted more unhealthy carbs. When I was strictly eating the Kickstart foods, I actually craved greens and fruit. The cake balls are still here - sent cupcakes to work with my daughter. I can't clean out all the unhealthy food because half of the family isn't doing the Kickstart. I did cover the cake balls with foil instead of plastic wrap so I don't have to look at them. Razz

I find that some days are just hungry days. What works for me is to keep healthy whole starches on hand to snack on, like potatoes or leftover brown rice or oatmeal. NOT bread or crackers or other processed foods that are higher in calorie density because they tend to just make me want more.

SO, if I am hungry between meals (and let's face it, I am always hungry between meals) I might have some oatmeal with fruit, or I might eat some yukon gold potatoes with a little salsa. Or I might warm up some rice and kale for my snack. That has a way higher satiety factor for me. On a "hungry day" this is what I need to keep me from breaking down and getting Cheetos from the vending machine.

For those of you who are anti-starch... settle down. I hear ya. Laughing A year ago I would have been right there with you. But now I follow Dr. McDougall's starch-based diet and I am a believer.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am trying to cut back on treats in the house but my 16yr old and 7 yr old sons have had a radical diet change and I was trying to show them you can still have yummy treats without the dairy... cake balls....mmmm....

It's like a slippery slope, isn't it! Some days, you just find you want to eat and eat...

I find it hard to break that momentum. The kickstart has been like a circuit breaker - I'm finding that because I am eating tasty, filling food, I'm not looking for something else. When I make something not particularly satisfying in a hurry, or eat without paying attention to my food, that's when I am in real danger of wanting more.

Of course, some people do just eat more than others. It's about finding what is not only healthy, but satisfying and sustaining for your body.

Don't beat yourself up about it! Just tackle the next day as a new day. I read a lovely post on one of the old forums, where someone said (in reference to falling off the vegan wagon) that she just thinks of every time she eats as a chance to think about what she's putting in her mouth.

Stick with it! oh and I am stating the obvious, I know, but often the days when I keep wanting food are days when I've done a hard workout and not taken in enough fluids. I think I am hungry when really I need water.
