When not feeling great....
Posted Friday, January 14, 2011 at 7:56 AM

One thing i would like to know from all you experienced vegans/vegetarians out there... is .. when someone gets sick in the house.. a cold.. it used to be chicken noodle soup;now that is out of the question, in fact it grosses me out. I need an alternative.... What is your go to meal if you are not feeling well?

I am hopeing for a great soup.. or spicy to clear out nasal passages.. (we do use a nettie pot.)
or something cold to soooth a sore throat or a fever..
or something quick and easy when you are too tired or too sick to really cook.
it doesn't have to be soup... whatever it is.. please share.

I feel great.. but honey caught just a slight bug..no fever. just coughing.. and achy... general yuck..

I was thinking cream of broccoli..

so what is your feel better food??

If there's congestion, creamy is not a great idea - too thick. A good veggie stock with lots of veggies is still warming. Much of the relief from chicken soup is the warm saltiness, and you can still get that from vegetable soup/broth. A good bowl of veggie chili can clear a lot of congestion if you like it spicy.

The big thing, though, is ask what it is HE wants. I know that when my DS is sick, what he craves is usually what he needs. Even way back when he was a toddler, his body knew what it needed. He was exposed to someone with a cold (didn't know at the time, they came down sick a day or so later). Spent several days eating nothing but oranges and the occasional bowl of pasta with tomato sauce. When we found out that the other person was sick, it clicked. Sure enough, DS was a bit sleepier and less energetic than usual, minor runny nose, for about a day, then he was over it. His body knew it needed a boost and he sought it out as best as he knew in his 3 yr old self. Now that he's older and we're wiser, we can help him seek out varieties of stuff that meet whatever it is he's seeking.

I actually was thinking about this very question just this week. My go to has always been my delicious, homemade matzo ball soup.

However, a vegan Tom Kha Gai I think would do the trick. It's not too creamy, it's a little tangy, it's warm, comforting and delicious. Traditional Tom Kha Gai calls for chicken broth; sub veg broth, skip the meat, add veggies and steamed tofu.

Here's a link to just one recipe of the hundreds that are out there:

I know that you were specifically asking about meals, but my go-to the minute I feel a cold coming on is to make some ginger tea. I chop a handful of fresh ginger, place it in a few cups of boiling water and let cook at a low boil until it's like a ginger syrup.
Then I just add to hot water and add sweetener to taste - agave or maple syrup.

I can't swear by any medicinal properties, but it usually helps me.

Hi there,

I agree, when I'm sick I need certain foods to help me feel good and get well soon. I've developed a certain regimen that seems to work well in my house and helps us heal quickly. I'm a PCRM instructor and we teach our students a few basics: 1) The most important thing is to get lots of antioxidants in meals to help your body fight the cold and also 2) to eat low fat (fat inhibits the immune system and may extend the life of the cold).
At the first sign of a cold (scratchy throat or just a headache), we take Green Goddess Breakfast drink (http://www.plantbasedhealth.com/index.php/other-tasty-favorites). Then, we usually switch to soups for our main nutrition. Savory Potato & Pear Stew is my favorite because its also a little spicy, if you use the jalapeno. Also, the Hearty Minestrone Soup and Spinach/Shiitake Soup is popular. The recipes are here; http://www.plantbasedhealth.com/index.php/other-tasty-favorites.

I hope everyone gets to feeling better soon! Thanks,

Hey Cynthia!

Before CD (celiac) I used to make a veggie chick soup. I bought the gluten in the little blue cans.... haha! At any rate, I used the broth in the can and chopped the gluten up fine and made a gluten noodle soup that was really good!

Now that I am gluten free, I do miss that soup! I put those wide noodles in it too....yumm... Sad

I went back and edited as I found a link! Gotta LOVE computers!

Quick, easy, spicy comfort food for me is brown rice rotini tossed with peanut sauce (Neil Barnard's recipe from "Food for Life," but I substitute stevia for honey and add two big tablespoons of Sambal Olek for the red pepper flakes). I line a bowl with raw spinach, top it with the pasta and peanut sauce, and garnish with a few roasted cashews and sliced green onions. It just takes a few minutes to make and you'll have enough leftover to eat it for days.

You know the truth is, I very rarely suffer from colds since turning vegan. That's actually one of the things I miss about the old days. Those beautiful sick days off work. Getting snug under the duvet, watching the West Wing and drinking vanilla latte's all day.

I'm actually wondering if anyone has any tips for getting a cold. Any mild-infection-inducing techniques that I might not know about. I've tried pretty much everything.

Anyone ??

Why not just take a day off and do all that? I had a boss that used to give us "stupid days" - those days when you're physically healthy but mentally need a break.

There's no way my boss would let me do that. I usually use up all my annual leave by the end of January. And plus there was also something about the cold itself that made it that much cozier under the duvet.

Incidentally, "stupid days" is how my boss refers to those days where I turn up to work.

I did not have a cold/flu or anything remotely close for over 20 years. Then I had Grandchildren.....I had 2 colds last year, pretty much back to back. I would rather get snug on my own without the sneezes, coughs, and headache! I don't do anything on Saturday. That is my rest day and I enjoy the same kind of thing you are talking about, but as a way of treating myself kindly!

Sneezes to you Theo!

Our whole family gets sick every time we visit my in-laws. Every. Single. Time. It's usually just like a 48 hour bug, but with 2 tiny kids it's awful. We see them about 5 times a year.

I think it's because 2 of them are paramedics and they are exposed to so many different germs, because their house always seems very clean.

I'll have to give you their address Theodore...

when not feeling great...I tend to over-eat...

I was super tired last night...had a wonderful breakfast, lunch...staying with 21 kickstart style...

then, went to a wedding...nothing to eat...it was a family style kinda weddindg...small...I thought they must have someone catering for the event...but, turned out, none...it was

sausage, german style
cracker
potatoes pie (with chicken)
salad (with tuna)
cupcake, candy, cookies
cabbage (it was all gone when I got there)
and chocolate...

I was not prepared...nothing fit into vegan...and I was starving...

I kept eating cracker, more cracker...picking some potatoes (trying not to eat tuna)...potatoes pie (again, trying not to touch ckicken)...then, more cracker...

I was hungry...6 months old baby was craying (his bed time already)...I was tired, and again, hungry...

when I got back home, all I wanted to do is eating chips...I know, not healthy, I was too tired to make salad (and not a lots veggies in frez...need to go grocery shopping)...

I sat on the couch, and almost fell into sleep...didn't wanna move...and kept eating...chips...sweet potato chips....

and I felt bad...

Hi Wen,
All is not lost.. bummer of a day.. tomorrow will be better...
just an idea....a really quick grain is couscous...ready in 5 min.. add a can of black beans and a can of corn or a a can of tomatoes.. all done.. all this has a long shelf life.. just keep a couple of cans in your pantry for emergencies..super quick and inexpensive..

should be better tomorrow.. don't beat yourself up.. it's a learning process...

Gotta say that I became vegan 8-15-09, and for two winters (well, this one's not over yet!), I watched those succumb around me at work with flu, colds, and whatever, and I've sailed through healthy! While I've been healthy my whole life, thankfully, I did get the occasional colds, and short term flu symptons (fever 1-2 days and overall aches). Think my immune system loves me even more now!

Theo, It is funny you should ask, when I typed that I thought I should clarify that sentence... but I didn't! haha Nope, I mean my daughter had children, thereby, making me a grandmother of 2. Not too shabby since I am 47 now and have a nearly 3-year-old granddaughter and a 7-1/2-month old grandson!
