Cause and effect

I lost 20 pounds in 4 weeks going vegan. A few things to share- eating potatoes and even brown rice stopped my weight loss for a couple of days. Same with even one cocktail. Once you're experiencing a steady weight loss - even if it's less than a pound a day - it becomes easy to see the cause and effect of what you consume.

So I'm avoiding those things and hope to lose another 15.

Very, very interesting, Glenna, and very good point for those struggling to lose weight...not that we must all give up potatoes and rice, but that we must pay attention to our own bodies and use a little "diet" common sense. None of us want to have to "diet"...we all want to just eat healthy, be healthy, and be slim..but you still have to adjust, if you want to lose weight. And at least for me....as much as I hate to admit it....the carbs definitely enter into this. If one is hugely overweight, and eats a terrible SAD, just going low-fat vegan should result in some major weight loss. But once you get close to your goal weight, i.e. those "last 5-10 lbs", it gets tricky. McDougall says eat all the starches, but NO oil,or added fat, and that does seem to work for some. For me, though, and I admit this just is easier for me, more fruits, veggies, beans, and less carbs works. And no sugar! A "cause and effect" food for me? Popcorn! Go figure. I will always be up on the scale the next day, after a bowl, even with no salt or butter.

This is sage advice. I've gained recently, and though it's not a whole lot, it was due entirely to what you mention here... too much bread, starch, munchy things like popcorn and cereal and pretzels... ah, well. It's hard to get the head and the hands into alignment sometimes. Wink

I can relate as I also struggle with my weight (see below story for an example why). But a vegan treat every now and again is not such a bad thing, even if it is a carb or popcorn.

I had my usual weekly lunch with my 82yr old mother this past weekend. Before lunch she looked at me and said "would you like a glass of wine before lunch?". Ï dont know" I replied, "Do you feel like one?" She was in a good mood and answered "Yes, lets. After all, once you go (meaning die) your a long time dead". My mom only drinks occasionally however we enjoyed a glass of wine together before lunch. Its fun to be naughty sometimes, especially when in good company. The kickstart may not be the best timing but my mom wont be around forever either.
