How is everone doing???
Posted Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 6:36 PM
Feeling like the D student in class and wanted to check in and see if anyone else had thoughts on struggling. I am actually thinking of trying Kathy Frestons cleanse diet. I eat ALOT. I was off refined sugar then JUMPED off the wagon with coconut milk ice cream for 2 days and then today 2 dove chocolates, cocoa, and a lindt. Sigh... AND I am sooo grumpy!!!! Want to lock myself away and eat cake with frosting... lots and lots of frosting.....

Hi, I am still with the diet. I have lost about 6 lb., my bp is down and cholesterol is down. I feel great! I have had, on occasion, a wine before dinner or a burbon and diet ginger ale.

I struggle a little bit with sugary stuff and a lot with cheese. Today I went out for lunch with some coworkers, had pasta with grilled veggies and black beans, didn't go crazy on the chips ...so far so good... and then my friend wanted to see the dessert tray. I ended up eating a big honking piece of tres leches. Not at all vegan or healthy. Plus I've had two Dr. Peppers today to make up for all the sleep I didn't get last night. I don't think you should beat yourself up for the quantity of food you eat. You should eat until you feel satisfied. Just make half of it vegetables. They're not only chock full of vitamins and antioxidants, they're also very low in calories. So you can eat a lot and be good to yourself.

Don't give up! Those are just little slips - you have the main idea. Keep with it. You can do this. Maybe after this the Kathy Freston cleanse would be a good transition.

Tina's advice is sound... eat lots and lots of veggies, and then you won't feel so guilty about the treats. And who's to say that you can't have some? Buy a vegan, rich, dark, expensive chocolate bar – one that's really a treat for you – and keep it in the fridge. You can have a piece a day, after all, dark chocolate is good for the heart. And allow yourself desserts! Just make them yourself – make healthy smoothies, shakes, popsicles, even sorbet, pudding, mousse, pie – all of these can be vegan AND HEALTHY! You don't have to suffer to be healthy. Take care of your body, treat yourself with kindness. Eat healthy, nourishing foods and allow yourself treats. It's the only way to stay sane. You deserve to be healthy.

Hmmm... I know that Endangered Species and Dagoba are popular, but I've never tried them. I usually just look for a high-quality, high-cocoa percentage bar (~75% or above), and then make sure it doesn't contain milk fat or other sinister ingredients. Haha. If there are Trader Joe's in your area, many of their store-brand chocolates are vegan. Also, Ghirardelli Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips and Guittard Semi-Sweet Chips are both vegan. A couple of the Ritter Sport bars are, the Marzipan and I think the Dark Chocolate and Hazelnut are, too... but check first! Also, Walden Farms makes a vegan (and gluten-free) calorie-free (!) chocolate syrup that's good for mixing into things like smoothies, milk, mousse, etc. or topping a rice cake or other carb-y substrate. Haha. That should get you off and running.

I sprinkle a scattering of Ghirardelli semi sweet morsels on my cereal in the morning many days - they are vegan (though they don't advertise it as such, there are no animal ingredients, not even powdered milk fat, on the label or listed on their website for this product). That's a key factor - read the labels. Not everything that is, in fact, vegan, is marketed as such. The 72% dark chocolate Ghirardelli squares aka Intense Dark Twilight are also vegan (though the 60% and 86% are not). The best thing is that these are available right on the grocery store shelves - it costs about the same for one "designer" bar (like Dagoba or Green and Black's) as it does for a small bag of the Ghirardelli squares and they're usually easier to find. When I really want to splurge, though, like for a birthday or holiday, we'll go to a local chocolate shoppe - freshly made right on the premises, vegan Belgian chocolates. Doesn't use processed sugar, either agave or brown rice syrup for sweetening. Oh so yummy (but pricey). Even our now-13 yr old, when given the choice between several bags of standard commercial treats and a scant 1 lb of the vegan chocolates, chooses the vegan chocolates - they're that good --Deb R
