Organic and Canned
Posted Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 3:10 PM

I've read that there are some vegetables that really soak up the chemicals in pesticides, including celery, peppers and other leafy greens such as kale and lettuce. So, is it vital that we buy organic produce? I've also heard that canned items aren't good because the chemicals in the can liners leach into the food. What's the verdict there?

I have really been on a plan to avoid plastic as much as possible. NEVER use plastic in the microwave. I try to avoid cans, though I do keep canned, organic beans on hand for quick meals. My veggies are fresh or frozen, I don't even like canned vegetables, they are SO over cooked. I wish more soups and beans came in glass jars.

If you want organic, some it is essential to buy organic like say Lettuce but when you buy a banana? Less so. I did notice that organic tends to have richer flavors and prefer it. If you search there are lists of essential to buy organic and not essential to buy organic all over the net. Jillian Micheals has one in her Metabolism book. Warning it is not Vegan/Vegetarian.

As to canned. The guilty chemical is BPA
http://blogs.consumerreports.org/safety/2009/11/testing-for-bpa-concern-over-canned-foods-.html

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration currently is reassessing what it considers a safe level of exposure to BPA, which some studies show is linked with increased risks of certain cancers, diabetes, reproductive abnormalities, and heart disease. Federal guidelines currently put the daily upper limit of exposure at 50 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body weight. But that level is based on experiments done in the 1980s rather than hundreds of more recent animal and laboratory studies indicating that serious health risks could result from much lower doses of BPA. "

Eden foods to date is the only one to go BPA free.

Jillian actually covers this topic and other chemical topics quite extensively in her book. While it is not a Vegan diet and I would not recommend the book for a diet I do recommended it for reading about additives and chemicals.
