nights and irregular schedule
Posted Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 7:35 PM

I was just wondering if anyone else doing the kickstart works nights with an irregular schedule? I would appreciate any suggestions for success. I enjoy my job and am unwilling to change it but at the same time I know that working nights does affect your metabolism and ability to lose weight. I think I am far healthier on this diet so far but I don't think I have lost more than 10 pounds. I started in July on my own actually because I didn't know this would pick up again in September so it's been longer for me. It's really hard to tell how much weight I have lost because my weight can vary by 3 pounds in just a day, and I don't know why. I drink water and avoid salt so water weight shouldn't be a factor. I also avoid processed foods although I do keep a few things around the house for those times when my schedule goes crazy, like tofurky links and Trader Joes vegan items.
Thanks a bunch,

Smile Carmen

Hey Carmen,
To alleviate your worry, know that everyone's weight varies a lot during the day - from 3 to up to even 7 pounds! It depends on how much you eat, how much water you drink, how much you exercise, etc. Make sure you weigh yourself at the same time each day and in the same circumstances (first thing in the morning, after using the restroom, for example).

Nights can affect a person's metabolism, but I think the effect can be far greater due to lack of exercise. People who work nights tend to be sedentary during the day and get less exercise than a "normal" daytime person, and therefore might lose less weight. My only suggestion there would be to make sure you are getting good, consistent exercise.

Slowed metabolism can be a concern regarding night workers, and I recall hearing on a radio show something about tendency to eat at night going way up. Not sure what the percentage of likelihood was, though. And not sure if any of this is helpful. Haha. Smile
